The Dolphins were moving the ball at will and jumped to a 10-7 lead.... Bill Walsh used a dime package for most of the rest of that game... You think he could have pulled that little gimmick if Marino was handing off to Rickey Williams...

Actually that's the story of Marino's career... I puke when folks compare Marino's lack of big game success to Peyton Manning because Manning has the luxury of handing off to the Edge... Same thing during Kurt Warner's run... He had Marshall Faulk to keep the defense honest...

In Montana's defense he won a SB with Bill Ring...

You can't make it an all time poll. At least not without an other option. ;) It's a good question though. I would take out Namath, Brady, Jim Kelly and Bradshaw. I would add Tittle, Otto Graham and an Other option. I'm sure there are others here with a better historical perspective than me.

What funny is that Maynard said that he and Namath figured out that DB's would not be too crazy about running full tint into the corners of the endzones in Shea. There like a foot of place between the endzone and the wall of the stadium (watch old NFL highlights) so they purposely ran those routs. Maynard figured out how to take the blow in his body. The last two yards was the key to the route-the DB's tended to stop.

He was the first modern QB. They called him "Automatic Otto" because he and Paul Brown had figured out the plays ("progressions" they call it today) ahead of time and knew where he was going with it.

BTW- Baugh lead the league in punter for at least one year as well as being a gunslinger.

It's so hard to compare players from different eras, because the rules change so much. The quarterbacks now have it much easier, with pass-happy rules (pass-interference for nothing, for example).

Six division championships, five NFL championships (before the merger with the AFL), and two Super Bowl wins. Pro Bowler in 1960-62 and '66, and league MVP in 1966. And that's in the days when the QB was truly a field general, calling plays and managing the game while playing in it.

And don't forget his QB sneak to win the "Ice Bowl," the dramatic NFL championship game on New Year's Eve 1967 when the Packers beat the Cowboys 21-17.

Staubach retired as the highest rated quarterback of all time, and Steve Young is now the highest rated ever. All those guys are great, and you can make a case for any of them, but I'd definitely add those two to the discussion.
