Injured Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens said he was only joking when he phoned the Falcons saying he might be available to play in Sunday's NFC Championship, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Owens caused a brief stir when he called Falcons wide receiver Jimmy Farris, his former San Francisco 49ers teammate.
"I was just messing with the guy," Owens told the Inquirer. "I wouldn't jeopardize my career by coming back too soon."
Owens befriended Harris when the latter was a member of the 49ers' practice squad in 2001.
"He called me during the (Vikings-Eagles) game and said, 'I might just be out there. You never know,' " Farris said.
Apparently, Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr. was let in on the joke too. Or is he (at least) preparing for Owens to at least make an appearance?
"He says he's playing," Mora told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He said (to Farris): 'Hey, you tell Jim I might be there. I might be there.' And I'll tell you what, he's such a tremendous competitor ... old (No.) 81 might just trot out on the field Sunday."
