WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- West Des Moines Police have launched a criminal investigation, and sources said Monday it involves Hawkeyes basketball player Pierre Pierce.

---SNIP---

The police report states that detectives are investigating a series of four crimes at the apartment complex: a break-in, the destruction of $1,300 worth of property, a crime of holding someone against their will and assault with intent to commit injury.

Sources tell NewsChannel 8 that they are investigating Pierce, and sources said the suspect is Pierce. Sources tell NewsChannel 8 that a search warrant was issued on Pierce's residence in Iowa City. The warrant has been sealed by a judge's order.

---SNIP---

In 2002, Pierce faced a felony charge of third degree sexual abuse of a female student athlete at the University of Iowa. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault causing serious injury - a misdemeanor. At the time, Pierce issued a statement saying, "I engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with a fellow student. I have privately apologized to my fellow student and today I publicly apologize as well."

Pierce agreed to perform 200 hours of community service, and to sit out the 2002-2003 basketball season.

2. I know, it was sort of an oxymoron
Just heard the story from my family, and had to check it out for myself.

3. The entire crowd booed him here in Champaign when Iowa came to play
As in, every time he got the ball, he was loudly booed by the entire crowd. I wondered why he warranted more hostility than any other opposing player; maybe this had something to do with it.

4. The sexual assault thing has something to do with it
There's also a lingering animosity between Iowa/Illinois over a 15-year old recruiting scandal.
