Yankees won't rule out pursuing Bonds

Matsui could be headed for knee surgery

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer 44 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP)—Hideki Matsui’s left knee swelled, increasing the possibility he will need season-ending surgery and perhaps giving the New York Yankees reason to contemplate signing Barry Bonds.:bounce:

General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Matsui was running out of options to rehabilitate his knee, which has sidelined him since June 22 and kept him from playing the outfield since June 15.

Cashman rarely rules out any options, so he wouldn’t exclude adding Bonds, who has offered to play at the minimum salary but has been shunned by all 30 major league teams this year. Cashman’s answer to a question on the field before the All-Star game, however, was intriguing.

“I would say any rampant speculation on us involving a player of that magnitude would be extremely premature,” Cashman said. “I would caution everybody to not misunderstand that since I’m not saying no to it, that that means, `Oh my gosh, that that might be happening down the line.’ It’s not something we’re focused on at this point. We’re focused on getting Hideki Matsui back rather than, you know, what we’re going to do if he’s not back.”

Richie Sexson, released by Seattle last week, could be another option for the Yankees, short-handed because of injuries to Matsui and Johnny Damon.

1. Ye gods...
please don't pick up Bonds. It wouldn't help either entity.

After the overblown acquisitions of stars Johnson and Clemens, I am so sick of seeing the Yanks throw money onto stupid fires. All false messiahs, and I wouldn't expect it of Bonds either, with due respect to his prowess. I'd just rather hope this doesn't take place.

4. Why are the Yankees a crooked team?
There's no salary cap in baseball, as the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and other teams can attest.

I can see why people might be angry they have the means to spend as much as they want on salary, but is that what makes them crooked?

On a happier note....while I wanted the NL to win the all-star game, I couldn't have been happier seeing Clint Hurdle lose another big game.

Jackass takes out my pitcher after 2/3 .. brings in Wagner and WHACK! Game tied.

The Rockies are like a bull in a china shop when it comes to how big a disaster they've been representing the National League.

Know what I'm say'n El Supremo?

15. Well one thing that bugs people about them

is that they'll use their money to take a player they don't need just so a rival WON'T get him. I'm sure you can't say that about the Tigers (my team, who, by the way, have spent a lot the last few years, but aren't known generally as one of the league's high rollers).

Steinbrenner once lured a Michigan quarterback into his farm system with the promise of millions - IF he refused to play football for Michigan anymore (Drew Henson). Of course, Steinbrenner's wife was a big Ohio State person, as it turns out. Drew Henson was a head case, but I think that the interference of MLB into NCAA football bore a little investigation, which of course never happened. Ohio State was notoriously quiet about the whole thing.

18. Well first of all, I think your examples of NYY grabbing players
just so their rivals won't get them are few and far between.

I'm pretty sure the Yankees "try" to get whomever they think will help them win, first and foremost. And I'm saying so as an independent National League fan observer.

Second of all, I wouldn't blame NYY from grabbing players away from Boston. I would hope my Giants would do the same when it comes to the Dodgers.

And finally, be careful Lisa. Look at how much the Tigers are spending on salary. Almost hard to criticize the Yankees if that's going to be Detroit's trend!!

19. I think you are stretching the Steinbrenner/ NCAA football connection.
Steinbrenner was just being Steinbrenner. i.e. being greedy. Ohio State was quiet because they had nothing to do with whatever you think steinbrenner did.

8. I would like to see Tampa win this year also.
Of course, Barry has not been convicted/suspended/had his stats taken away/ or otherwise for the allegations you've already sent him to prison for.

But I can only imagine how bitter you are rooting for the Nationals and Redskins. lol

If not, it would take him weeks to get ready, wouldn't it?

13. If he's intent on coming back, he's been training.
And a pure hitter like him wouldn't need much time at all to get his stroke back.
