I've played so little in the last 3 years I've forgotten what's in my bag anymore.

What do you carry?

1. I carry...

2-SW plus an L-wedge (I believe 63 degrees), plus driver and 3-Wood. Irons are the original Hogan Edge that I bought around 1988/89. Wouldn't trade them for anything. I bought the 3 wood out of a barrel many years ago and I haven't a clue the brand. Driver was bought from someone who bought it from a club maker. Putter is an original Ping Anser.

2. are those irons forged?

I've never played those. I just went to look and I play Mizuno T-Zoid 3-PW with stiff sensicor shafts. They're forged and they have the teeniest and sweetest sweet spot.

I still drive with the original callaway war bird. Something about the weight that suits me fine. I can't stand swinging toasters on the end of my driver shaft.

Can't wait for March, official season start in Atl for me.

10. Yes, they're forged

The Hogan edge was probably the original forged cavity back clubs. They have a decent sized sweet spot and are forgiving as cavity backs are supposed to be. And they have the forged feel.

My driver now has a "toaster" on it. But I'll tell you what! I hit the ball easily 50-60 yards farther than I did with my old driver.

15. 50 or 60 Yards????

What was your old driver? Hickory shafts or something? Geez, i couldn't hit the ball an extra 50 yards unless i was playing down an airport runway! I hit it in the mid to high 240's, but i'm REALLY straight. I don't overpower any golf course. But, i can score some!

16. It's the technology

nothing else. I don't think I swing that much harder, and hell, I'm probably 10 years older.

I quit playing in about 1994 for about 7 or 8 years. I came back playing my old Hogan Edge's and my old metal driver and 3 wood. The driver wasn't anything special, just a metal head and graphite shaft. I came back after my layoff hitting it 235 - 240 and maybe 250 downwind, or about what I hit it before. (Of course, all this after 3 or 4 lessons). Everybody convinced me to get a new driver last year that had the current technology of a big head and the newest generation of shafts. I forget how long the shaft is, but it's about 1-2" longer than everybody else's driver (which also helps with the distance). Once I got used to it I was hitting drives as far as 280 - 285. The biggest reason is because the sweet spot is so high up on the faced that the ball is launched on a much higher trajectory and therefore gets to carry a lot further before being slowed down by hitting the ground. I'm not doing anything different. THe club does the work.

Assuming I'm on my game, I can count on probably 260 - 265 on drives and reach back for an extra 20 yards when I need to. Of course, you gotta hit it straight and high.

17. Wow!

That's all i can say. I haven't really noticed any substantial gain in distance between my old Quadpro and the Ping Si3. The Ping is more forgiving in terms of straightness if i hit it low or out near the toe. (Nothing will be that forgiving if you hit it near the heel.)

Before i had the MS, i did hit it around 275 to 280, without titanium (steel heads) and could hit an 8 iron 140. Now, i only hit a 7 iron around 145. But, i still hit >80% of fairways and about 10 greens per round. But, i sure didn't get that kind of added distance.

Either you found the perfect club for your swing, or i'm a weenie and don't swing hard enough!

7. Taylor Made irons

Nothing special. Woods are a mish-mash of Adams (not a Tight Lies; a 22-degree that serves me as a 7-wood), Big Bertha (5 is only one left from the set) and a couple of drivers that came right out of the discount rack at Academy. Knight is the brand; only prerequisite was that they had to have a clubhead the size of a softball and be priced under $50.

Played last Friday morning; it was forty degrees at tee-off but warmed into the 60s and I had to come out of the sweater at the turn. And I shot true to form: a 115.

11. Oh, Boy! A What's In The Bag Thread!

I use:
Ping Si 3 Driver
13 & 18 degree Adams Fairway Woods (Strong 3 and Strong 5) Both the original design.
Hogan Apex Irons (3 - PW)
Titliest Vokey Design Wedges (52-6 & 56-10 & 60-06, but i don't use the 60 anymore.)
Taylor Made Center Shafted Putter (Cavity back blade)
All the clubs have cord grips on them.

I use TopFlite Infinity for the ball because it's soft and sounds really nice when hit.

I wear Etonic shoes. I like them because they're the best feeling ones with no socks, and i always prefer to play sockless. (Unless it's really cold, or something.) I don't wear a glove; never have.

Got my Hcp down to 3.5 this year. Used to be scratch before i had MS. The Hcp went up to about 12 for a while due to the disease, but i eventually found a swing that accomodates the physical issues caused by my illness and have chipped a stroke or so off the Hcp every year for the past 8 or 9 years. Now, a typical score for me is between 75 and 78.

14. Yeah, But . . .

. . .with MS one doesn't know from one weekend to the next whether one will have to do another reconstruction project on the swing. At least i putt well pretty much every time i play.

I went through a 5 week slump this year where i only broke 80 once in 14 rounds. Then, it all came back at once and i finished the season back where i thought i belonged.

Game's hard enough, without having to do battle with one's own body over control of balance and vision. I hate that the guys on TV make it look so simple!

21. WOW - a scratch golfer! I'm impressed

I knew nothing about golf until my kid showed a talent towards golf, I have learned a lot in the past two years since he has taken it seriously. He first broke 100 15 months ago and he is now regularly shooting in the 80s.

For you to keep a 3.5 with MS is absolutely amazing.

22. Thanks. I Take It Fairly Seriously

With MS, i'm in a hurry to accomplish things, since i can't be sure there will be the ability to do what i like in a year, or 2 or 10. So, i try to be good at anything i try.

When i was a better player, i could play championship length courses between -1 and +3. Now, i have to lay off the monster courses and stay in the 6500 - 6700 range. I lost a lot of length when i had to completely reinvent my swing to accommodate the MS. But, i got my consistency and accuracy back. So, i can live with less distance, since not every golf course has to be 7400 yards. I'll just play the ones that aren't too long for me.

But, as happy as i am with my game, trust me; Tiger, Vijay, and Phil aren't worried.

19. Mostly old school

Hogan Apex Grind blades from the early '90s, including a 1 iron which I used to belt. Now I've drifted into my 40s and need to make an adjustment. I've lost one club in length and can't work the ball right-to-left reliably any more. I need to find more forgiving clubs, especially long irons because I suck with fairway woods. In fact, I only carry a driver, a Taylor 320 Ti. I've gone to golf shops to check out irons with graphite shafts and the look of loft even in long irons.

A few years ago I bought an offset and cavity back graphite shafted Cobra driving iron which is generally reliable but not as long as my 1 iron used to be.

For sand wedge I love my Hogan Sure out with the huge flange. I'm more confident out of the bunkers with it than I've ever been before.

I putt both ways depending on the break with an old John Reuter Jr. Bullseye Wide Blade. That strategy gets cackles from platying partners, and one group behind, until they see me draining sliders, always putting with the break not against my body. I honestly can't believe that strategy is not embraced. It feels like stealing. Of course, I have somewhat of an advantage because I'm a lefty who has always played righthanded. So putting lefty is not awkward or much of an adjustment.

24. I use

Maxfli Revolution irons 3 to sw, TaylorMade clone 3w and 7w, TaylorMade 320 driver (which usually stays in the shed on competition days) and an old style Ping putter.

I play at my local course usually twice a week all year round. 9 holes on Friday semi serious stableford competition called a chook run - 3 bucks entry and the top dozen or so scores on the day win a frozen chicken; and 18 hole official competition on Saturdays.

Currently I play off 14 after losing 2 shots from my handicap last weekend after a round of 44 stableford points. One of those rounds where the drives went straight, chips landed close and putts went in.
