How Lopsided WAS The Vince Carter Trade?
Since the trade:

V. Carter: 25.6 points per game - 6 rebounds per game
.
.
.
.
E. Williams: 4.9 points per game - DNP-CD last two games
A. Williams: 0.7 points per game - 12th man on the team
A. Mourning: Never played for Toronto

I think this might go down as one of the most lopsided trades, not only in NBA history, but in pro sports history as well.

1. in the nba
trades are about cap room often times. If Toronto can use the cap room they got to get some good players, that will be factored into the trade. Also Carter was a cancer on that team.

3. Exactly. Cap is everything. McCarty from Boston was traded for 2nd rd
pick. Now 2nd rd. picks are a dime a dozen, but McCarty was being paid $3 mil.

4. I believe
most of the contracts Toronto acquired are expiring. They will have a ton of cap room this offseason.

5. so?
its not like anyone wants to play up there.

A. Its cold.
B. You make less money with the exchange rate.
C. They ran Vince Carter out of town.
D. They have so many internal problems.

You think free agents are going to line up to go play in Toronto? The only thing keeping that franchise afloat WAS Vince Carter. Look what happened with Vancouver.

6. Carter admitted
he didn't play hard. Now he's putting up great numbers, but you can't depend on him.

7. i think you can
he just didn't want to be THE guy. Now he has Jason Kidd to be the leader and he can just be the scorer.

When Richard Jefferson gets back the pressure on Carter will be even less. When the Nets bring in a big-man this offseason, like Shareef Abdur Rahim, then Carter will just have to be himself and the Nets will coast to 60 wins and a title.

12. It's not that dire for the Craptors.
its not like anyone wants to play up there.

A. Its cold.

Not really much colder than Boston, NY, or Jersey.

B. You make less money with the exchange rate.

I'm pretty sure the salaries are in U.S. dollars.

C. They ran Vince Carter out of town.

Only indirectly. My understanding is that he was getting discontent with the organization's unwillingness to try to build a quality team around him. So during the last offseason, he indicated a desire to leave, so rather than keeping an unhappy salary drain around they traded him.

Furthermore the loss of Vince Carter isn't as great as you might think. The guy was injured all the time, and the team as a whole frequently played better without him. The main downside of his loss is, as you pointed out in the orignal post, that they didn't get jackshit in return.

D. They have so many internal problems.

This is something that's not too hard to partially remedy by getting rid of a few key team cancers and the coach.

Really, the main reason the Craptors will have a challenge getting quality free agents is because they suck and don't show any signs of stopping the suck. Good players are going to shy away from signing with perennial losers like Babcock and Co.

10. Coach Mitchell abused him.
Everyone wants out of Toronto, look at what he did to Rafer Alston...
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/104-02112005-448895.html
that's why he didn't play as hard as he should of, and I wouldn't neither.
Go Nets!

11. The time in which he claims not to have given it his all...
predates Coach Mitchell.
