Turn it off!: The 50 worst announcers in sports today
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/post/Turn-it-off-The-50-worst-announcers-in-sports?urn=top,137612

A brief sampling:

2. Chris Berman: The first of the truly cartoonish sports announcers, and still the worst. Has completely lost sight of the fact that he's the mouthpiece, not the attraction. His nicknaming habit, his "back-back-back," his chummy "look! I'm hanging with jocks!" repartee on set -- it all went stale in the '90s, and yet he still trots it out, week after numbing week. Go, Berman, and take Leather with you....

5. Dick Vitale: A cartoon character, but less credible -- and more annoying -- than Spongebob Squarepants. Never saw a recruiting violation he couldn't ignore. Shameless Duke homer; the evidence is indisputable....

8. Tim McCarver: This is an entry on a list about the worst announcers in sports. See, when you're making a list, you break it down into different categories and put spaces between the entries, so people can tell it's a list. Like this entry about Tim McCarver, Fox baseball analyst. McCarver analyzes baseball for Fox. And while he's analyzing baseball for the Fox network, he offers stunning behind-the-scenes insight, just like you're getting in this entry here. Which is part of a larger list....

16. Troy Aikman: Like Robin Williams, you don't notice until later that he didn't actually say anything.

it does not involve blogging for Yahoo! Sports. Take it up with them.

edit: Besides, we're talking about announcers. Many great players have made horrible announcers, like Joe Morgan, right near the top of the list.

2. I actually think Aikman is pretty good
He certainly knows what he's talking about and is much easier to listen to than many former players. I used to hate him as a player but that hate has not translated to the broadcast booth.

3. Aikman and Moose Johnston have come out as well spoken announcers.
The one that really annoys me is Dan Dierdorf. :ugh:

I don't get it. Are you a DC'er or not?

Maybe the name "BillBucknerinMD" is more appropriate.

:hi:

21. Mets my Nat'l league team. Sox my AmLeague team. '86 a cruel joke.
Spent wonder years in Conn. and RI.

As a Norfolker I worked in the Mets' AAA park. Met Mook a couple of times. His wife too. Terrific guy.

Stanley should have broken towards the bag. Had he fielded the ball cleanly, Buckner still would not have beaten Mook to the bag.

25. Aikman, he drives me nuts.
The Cowboys, they are no good without him.
The network, it has made a mistake in hiring him.

Upton, he must get my drift?

4. agree with #8
McCarver is the worst. Second worst is Joe Morgan, who feels the need to repeat everything he says about 50 times. And the guy who does PBP for hockey on VS. His voice is several octaves too high to be enjoyable. And don't give the same goal call every time. That is so boring. And that goes for football, too. The guy in KC who says "Touchdown! Kan.....sas....city" So lame.

8. I am not alone. Freakin' Joe Buck.
9. Joe Buck: Alternating between dull and sanctimonious, Buck is a crotchety curmudgeon trapped in a younger man's body. When he's not draining the life out of the greatest moments in modern sports, he's lecturing us on the sad state of the NFL.

He just bores the hell out of me, because he wants to let everybody know how much the game bores him.Great and spectacular plays are just an interruption to what he considers the topic of the moment.

He also killed the 'Leon' commercials.

11. Anyone out there have any local announcers they'd like to nominate?
although, for some reason, the greatest concentration of suckitude does appear to be at the national level, much like in politics. :eyes:

Note that, in another flagrant example of the sports media's New York-philia, John Sterling ("And the Yankees win! The-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e Yankees win!!") actually made the list.

14. The radio play-by-play on Redskin games with Sonny and Sam.
He uses the word 'situation' CONSTANTLY!!!!!!!!!!

It's not "a third down situation," it's THIRD DOWN!!!

I think Sonny and Sam really miss Frank Herzog. Someone at Tastee Diner told me that S&S are thinking of retiring. I think Doc Walker is being groomed to replace them. He's very good, though Sonny is scary smart and really funny.

24. McCarver and Vitale are 1 and 2
Trying to pick one or the other is like asking which is worse, a hard kick in the nuts or a baseball bat to the kneecaps.
