RACE OF THE DAY: HOLY BULL
Proven stakes winners Beethoven (Kentucky Jockey Club) and West Side Bernie (Kentucky Cup Juvenile) make their 3-year-old debuts today against some promising horses coming out of allowance and maiden races over the Gulfstream strip.
West Side Bernie is the tepid 3-1 favorite in the field of 11, with Beethoven at 4-1. But with the short run into the first turn, they drew the disadvantageous outside posts -- post 10 for West Side Bernie and 11 for Beethoven.
West Side Bernie was second in the Delta Jackpot in his last start after finishing a reasonably close sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, for which his 98 BRIS speed figure is tops in today's field.
Kelly Breen trains both West Side Bernie and Atomic Rain, who was second in another tough allowance race Jan. 8 and will run in Tampa's Sam Davis.
