Bob Knight knew Pat Summitt would be a good coach
Knight first got to know the legendary Tennessee basketball coach during the 1979 Pan American Games.
Summitt often would have lunch with Knight, then-Army coach Mike Krzyzewski and Fred Taylor, who was Knight's coach at Ohio State.
“She just asked questions,” Knight said of Summitt, who was 27 years old at the time. “Whatever it was, she'd have questions. You knew back then that Pat Summitt was going to be good. She's interested, she's knowledgeable and most of all, she wants to be a good coach.”
“Coaches rarely get 30 wins in a season,” Knight said. “You could have 30 wins a year for 33 years, and you'd still be 10 short of where Pat Summitt almost is.
“When Pat started coaching (1974), there wasn’t any reason that any other school anywhere couldn’t have done what she did. She didn’t have any better resources than anybody else. She just worked harder and she was just better at it. She’s never looked back. The only person who's been able to compete with her is (Connecticut’s) Geno Auriemma. In all this time, Pat has had only one serious competitor. I think that's amazing.”
Asked if Summitt could coach a men’s college program, Knight said: “If she wanted to, she could. I think Auriemma could coach a men's program. I don’t know why Pat couldn’t. I think it would all depend if she wanted to do it or not. She’d be good.”
“I started playing basketball 50 years ago, and I coached for 42 years,” Knight said. “In that time, the greatest development that I have seen for players in any sport is in women’s softball and women’s basketball. The development of players in women’s basketball has been astronomical.”
