You And I Just Bought Santonio Holmes A New Cadillac Escalade
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/2009/02/02/2009-02-02_cadillac_opts_to_keep_mvp_prize_quiet.html

TAMPA - Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes will get his brand-new Cadillac, even if financially troubled General Motors would just as soon nobody knows about it.

Holmes picked out Cadillac's most expensive model Monday as his reward for winning the MVP: the Escalade Hybrid Platinum with an $85,200 sticker price, according to Cadillac spokeswoman Joanne Krell.

But breaking from recent tradition, there was no Cadillac on the field Sunday night during the awards ceremony and no Cadillac in the hotel ballroom Monday for the MVP news conference. Usually the MVP marks off on a board which car he wants. There was no board, either. It was all done in private.

There was no mention of Cadillac or of Holmes winning the car at the news conference. It was at the request of Cadillac, commissioner Roger Goodell told the Daily News Monday. When asked if Cadillac asked not to be mentioned, he said, "Yes."

1. You Sure The NFL Doesn't Pay For That?
I thought that award was taken from the NFL's receipts for the Superbowl. No?

2. Yes, I am sure
If you read the linked article, it says that Cadillac gave Santonio the choice of car, and he smartly picked the most expensive model they had. But they knew it would be bad publicity, so dictated to the NFL that they should make no mention of it.
Is there any doubt now, in the face of such incompetence, why this company has gone bankrupt? The only purpose in giving away these cars is for the PUBLICITY. The concept itself is ridiculous - giving away freebies to rich people, come on. But to beg the gov't for a handout, lay off thousands, then give away a top-of-the-line car and NOT publicise it is even dumber.

3. I Read That, Too
But, i'm not interpreting that as GM donating the car. The NFL could be paying Cadillac and the MVP gets to pick what he wants. The PR/Marketing thing you describe, i get. But, they could be acting that way despite the fact that the NFL is paying for it.

I'm still not interpreting it the same way you are.

Oh Well.

5. Because It's Their Award!
The NFL owns EVERYTHING regarding the Superbowl. Why would they? Because they run everything to do with with NFL football and have for decades.
