Mt. Rushmore of Sports
Check out your state to see if you agree with who they'd carve into the mountain:

(Tim Tebow for Florida??)

1. for Maryland
I totally agree with Cal Ripken,jr and Johhny Unitas, and yeah I guess Michael Phelps is a good one too. Not so sure about Brooks Robinson though. I would choose Len Bias, I think.

2. No way
Brooks Robinson was THE greatest third baseman in MLB history, in my humble opinion.

3. Magic Johnson over Montana and Walsh?
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 07:17 PM by Upton
That list must be a joke.

Washington's is screwed up too: Largent the fundie is a pig....shouldn't he be in Oklahoma or something?

listed under the Pennsylvania category, along with Joe Namath!

6. Your absolutely right...
I was disappointed that Joe Montana was not listed in PA. As for California;
Tiger Woods John Wooden Magic Johnson Jackie Robinson - That is not bad.

Surely there are other Players who should be on the list. I know Ronnie Lott went
to USC, but Not sure where he is from.

BTW it lists John Wooden as California and Indiana? Are these the same guys? If so, why
are they listed in two diffrent states?

5. San Bruno Mountain: Joe Montana, Ron Lott, Jerry Rice and Bill Walsh
Sports stars should appear in the city/state where they triumphed. San Bruno Mountain straddles San Francisco and South San Francisco, and overlooks Candlestick Park (for those unfamiliar with the territory).

That would be my 49er tribute.

17. Because if he were on any state, it should be Indiana
Which is where he moved at 13 to race bigger vehicles, since California wouldn't let him.

14. I'd take Ditka off of Illinois
Jordan is a no-brainer, and it's hard to argue with Payton or Ernie Banks, but there are several more deserving than Ditka. Red Grange would be my choice.

16. Indiana's sucks
John Wooden? Christ, he was at Indiana State for all of a few years, and that was it.

I'm no Notre Dame fan, but Asa Parseghian belongs up there, or Oscar Robertson (played high school ball in Bloomington), or Reggie Miller. Get Bobby Knight off of there - that man is nothing but a selfish, whorish primadonna.

Peyton Manning - OK, I can go with this one. He's easily the best Colt since they moved to Indianapolis.

Larry Bird - Another obvious one.

19. They pretty much nailed Minnesota.
Minnesota
Kirby Puckett / Herb Brooks / Harmon Killebrew / Bud Grant

Although a very strong argument could be made for George Mikan - and he'd be in the discussion for a national Mt. Rushmore, at least for the NBA.

25. I think Pippen's
pro career was better then his college days. Other possibilities could have been Scotty Thurman, or Corliss Williamson who has both an NCAA championship and an NBA championship. Four per state just ain't enough but that makes the choices more significant.

31. No Argument
But, the Rushmore thing has to do with what they did overall, right?

Pippen and Moncrief were both among the best 20 perimeters defenders ever!

They both belong for all they've done athletically!

Just what i think.

My fourth choice would be, one of (instead of Ditka):

I didn't take any notes, but i saw at least 4 names, probably more, that were in two different states.

Jordon, Jackie Robinson, Wooden, Barry Sanders i saw, for sure.

29. I'd change Florida
Shula & Marino are Miami favorites, but not huge in the remainder of the state. In fact, I think you'd have to go with:

1) Bobby Bowden - obvious 1st choice
2) Steve Spurrier - the state's first Heisman winner; first to lead UF to an SEC championship (big deal back then)

After that it gets hard to pick:
Charlie Ward, Emmitt Smith, Danny Wuerffel, Jack Youngblood, etc.

and I'll admit the pickings are rough, but seriously?

Roger Maris Phil Jackson Lute Olson Darin Erstad

I suppose these are supposed to be nationally recognizable names, but the fact that there is nobody from UND hockey on there is just wrong, wrong, wrong.
