Could/Should Pat Summit Coach Men's Basketball
Now that Pat Summit has won 1,000 games ESPN, as they have been doing for the last few years, are asking if Pat Summit could or should coach men's basketball. What do DUers think? I am not trying to take anything away from Summit, but I do question if she would be as good in men's basketball as she is in women's basketball. My questioning really has nothing to do with her gender. I do not think Geno Auriemma would be as good in the men's game as he is in the women's game. I am not trying to bash women's basketball, in fact I have defended women's basketball on a number of occasions, but I think it is easier to win in women's basketball. I just think that in the men's game more of the teams have good players. In the women's game you can pretty much so predict which teams will win based on their rank and their coach. In the men's game, as we have seen recently, the number one ranked team can be beaten by just about any other team.

2. She actually had a chance in the late 70's or early 80's, but the men's
program was so horrid, she decided against it.

3. The AD offered her the men's job back in the 90's......
She declined.

5. Why? I'd rather be the pioneer that sets the standard for decades to come
To me that would admit that the competition of women's basketball is something inherently inferior to that of men's basketball. She's got nothing to prove. She's already one of the best all-time coaches period. I'd stay and keep building up her legacy in college basketball and building up the Tennessee program as the preeminent program in women's college basketball.

On a related point, I never understand why long-time successful coaches leave for a more "prestigious" job. Like when Roy Williams left Kansas for North Carolina. What the hell was he trying to prove? He's never going to top Dean Smith in North Carolina, but if he stayed at Kansas he could have been the legendary builder that future coaches want to follow, instead of being just another, albeit very good, coach who goes from team to team building a career, but not necessarily a legacy.
