I can live to be ah thousand and I'll never understand people
who root for teams in different cities than where they live or where they're from.

Take madinmaryland for example.

Lives in, hello, Maryland .. yet roots for the Dallas Cowboys. :wtf:

He also roots for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but that started, I'm sure, when they were good during the "We are family" days.

Then you have another person in this forum who suspiciously roots for the San Jose Sharks -- one of the most powerful teams in all of professional hockey.

Yet the guy is from Los Angeles .. doesn't root for the Kings or the Ducks, but "roots" for the Sharks.

Oh but he flip flops and roots for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers -- not any of the two pro baseball teams in the Bay Area or the Bay Area's NBA team or even Sacramento's NBA team.

This is why I love sports and can't tolerate sports fans .. particularly those on sports radio who only cheer for winning teams and constantly propose ridiculous trades.

You should cheer for the teams from where you're from and you should be consistent like me in that regard.

Otherwise, you're a phony who'd rather deflect your phonyness by obsessing about Barry Bonds, Major League Baseball's home run king.

Upton is a model sports fan .. cheering for the teams from the Bay.

Even the extremely annoying Philly forum members root for the Philly teams.

1. Dude--- you crack me up....
Your computer is full of saved team Avatars that you use like a package of hemorrhoid pads---- switching from team to team to team is your specialty.

Oh and you giving props to your alter-ego is hilarious. I can just see you looking in the mirror going back and fourth with yourself plotting of ways to get back at the meanies on the DU sports forum.

You Cboy/Upton----is the gift that keeps on giving.

I've been sports fans of the teams you mentioned longer than you have been alive. Where I grew up there was no real natural "home teams" to route for. Interestingly, I have stayed a fan of all of those teams while moving to various locations in the nation.

Though given that you still live with your mother in SF, I can understand how you would not comprehend the real world.

On edit, look in the mirror, and you'll see who is really obsessing about BB.

6. Oh I see, you grew up where there was no real natural
"home teams" so you picked a successful franchise way down in Texas.

Why didn't you pick the Redskins or the then Baltimore Colts?

I realize my OP has made you beside yourself with anger .. just plain furious.

I understand. I'd be mad too if I was pinned into the corner.

But it had to be said.

People from Dallas should root for Dallas.

Is it in the "sports fan manual" that you borrowed from your mother??

Sports fans are under absolutely no obligation to support the teams within geographical proximity to them. Rooting for all the local teams doesn't make you a "model sports fan", whatever the hell that means.

29. I'm a Braves fan.
I've only been to Atlanta 2 times (not counting the airport). When I was younger, I was a big Red Sox fan, and baseball fan in general. When the Sox weren't playing, the Braves would be on TBS and I'd watch them lose. I became a fan then. These were the Ken Oberkfell, Dale Murphy, Claudell Washington days of the mid 80's. It made it easier that they were in the National league, so there was no conflict of interests.

Obviously, regional or otherwise rooting in the postseason is a different matter.

Nobody's teams make it to the big game every season.

So you should root for the home team, like the song commands us to do, first and foremost.

I cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals because my father is from that area and passed along his fandom to me. His family still lives in that area, although my parents do not, and I do not. I did live in the area for a couple of years as a boy.

I cheer for the San Antonio Spurs because I moved to that area when I was 12, and lived there, or in Austin for 28 years.

I don't have a football team, really, although technically it's the football Cardinals, who I cheered for as a kid. They play in Phoenix, a place I have never resided.

I have lived in the Seattle area for a few months now, so by using your logic, I should immediately drop my former associations and pick up cheering for the Mariners and Seahawks? Who shall I cheer for in the NBA? Oklahoma City where the old Sonics are, or Portland, since they are closer?

Please educate me.

53. actually, there is a good reason many people from the DC area, especially Maryland, root for the boy
the Cowboys, that is. the team that is the archrival of the local squad (sorry, the Ravens don't yet count, just as the Nats don't yet count for rivalries) back in the day, the Redskins were the last NFL team to integrate, while the cowpokes played (and abused, of course, like all players) black players. in fact, the Skins only integrated when forced to by the Federal government as a condition of moving into RFK. you see a lot of old african american men and women wearing cowboys gear here, and it has remained on a trickle down basis despite the love/hate relationship with the Skins.

fanhood is determined very young, for the most part. I both love and hate both the Red Sox and Yankees despite never living within 200 miles of either city (although I did go to college in New England) because the two people who taught me baseball, my grandfathers, were fans of each team. I am a Niners fan because the guy who taught me football was a Niners fan. I grew up watching Michigan football and Duke basketball, because the people around me did. I didn't live in a city with w football team until I was 25. I didn't go to a college with major sports (does grad school at Hopkins with LAX count?) the only team I adopted on my own (DC United) was because I happen to live in DC. you can't help who you were taught to root for as a kid, you just are.

56. I New England there are lots of NY Giants fans
Mainly cause these people rooted for em before the Pats came along. Even while the Pats were playing in Foxboro the Giants were New Englands adopted team.

As far as baseball goes there is the New York Boston rivalry. Despite the 86 series and the fact that there are no NL teams up here, the Mets are the NL team of choice for a lot of Bostonians. Lot of it also due to the rivalry with the Yankees.

There's lots of examples all over the place of people rooting for teams outside their area. Of course, when it's done to bandwagon jump it's a little cheezy. I don't think MadinMaryland is jumping on the Cowboys bandwagon or anything to that effect. That team has been pretty bad for a while now.

It's not like all the Chicago Bulls fans from the 90's who have completely dissapeared since Jordan left.
