Winter Hawks win eighth of ninehttp://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/1108558905200790.xml"The Winter Hawks are starting to look like a team that could do some damage in the playoffs.
The Hawks beat the Red Deer Rebels 7-2 on Tuesday night before 3,440 at Memorial Coliseum for their eighth win in nine games, moving within one point of second-place Everett in the WHL's U.S. Division. Red Deer (30-20-4-4) was without coach Brent Sutter, who was in Viking, Alberta, to attend a memorial service for his father.
Brian Woolger and Cody McLeod had two goals apiece for Portland (26-23-4-4). The Hawks hadn't beaten the Rebels at home in the regular season since Dec. 14, 1997, when Brent Peterson was their coach and the goals came from players such as Kevin Haupt, Matt Davidson, Andrej Podkonicky and Brad Isbister.
It was just coincidence that Peterson, who led the Hawks to the Memorial Cup championship in 1997-98, was in the building for the first time in seven years. He now is an assistant coach with the NHL's Nashville Predators and might be flying home early this morning if the NHL lockout ends.
..."---------- Short of a pre-season NHL game, this is all we get in the northwest. And it is what it is. A blast, if I do say so myself.
