Sharks defeat Bruins
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 10:22 PM by Upton
The two best teams in hockey (point wise) met in Boston tonight, with the Sharks making a statement with a convincing 5-2 win, the largest margin of defeat for the Bruins all year. Former Bruin Joe Thornton returned and scored the 4th goal.

The Sharks now have 37 wins in 51 games and more importantly are back on track..

1. Why are there no teams in SF? SJ is nearly an hour outside of SF.
I guess, though, it is within you 2000 mile radius, from Washington.

2. SJ is the largest city
in the Bay Area and I believe the third largest in California. There's a lot of talk about the 49ers building their new stadium down in Santa Clara County too.

BTW, I grew up in the Bay Area and have remained loyal to my roots.

3. Do they still have a minor league baseball team there. I remember ready a cute story
about the san jose bees in the early 70's. A couple of them made it to the majors. jamie quirk is the one I remember from the book.

If they are the third largest city, then why no major league team??

5. Because the Giants and A's are too close
right now the Sharks are their only major league franchise, unless you want to count the MLS Earthquakes.

Bees are no longer around, now they've got the SJ Giants.

6. The San Jose Giants are there...class A
Not a bad team. They're usually in the playoff hunt each year.

Congrats to the Sharks. It was a great game. The Sharks started a little rocky, but dominated from the 2nd period on. It shows what they can do if they really throw the body around and put pucks to the net. Nabokov was unbelievable. I'm glad it was a nationally televised game so the rest of the country could see the Sharks (a rare thing on the East coast). The Bruins are going to be a tough contender for sure if they indeed meet for Lord Stanley's cup. Home ice will be important but at least Los Tiburones can have some confidence they can beat them on the road, also.

4. Giants and 49ers are both in SF
San Jose has a greater population, but SF is the heart of the Bay Area.

8. Unless the 49ers and the city work something out
the new stadium is going to be built in Santa Clara Co....that would make sense anyway, not only is a large part of their fan base already there but the teams headquarters and practice facility is too.

9. WTF, CreekPuppy? The sport is hockey!
Why are there no NHL teams in SF if it is the heart of the bay area??

15. There is no arena in SF
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 02:26 PM by KamaAina
even the ancient Cow Palace is just outside SF in Daly City. The NBA Warriors play at the Oakland Coliseum, hence the name "Golden State" instead of SF.

edit: caps

10. The Sharks have had amazing talent for years now,
and this year's choke job in the playoffs should be even more hilarious.

13. I like that Danny Boyle, and Pavleski played excellent.

San Jose needed to stop their skid because Detroit is right on their ass.

I thought they looked great against the B's last night. A perfect road game. Hang close until the third and then put it away. And the Bruins have been awesome in the third period, so hats off to the Sharks for what they did. It was a big win for them. They don't have room to spare anymore, so they needed it.

Tough loss for the B's. I'm sure they expected to play better in that 3rd period. Thankfully they have very comfortable leads of 21 points in their division, and 13 points in the conference. Non-conference games don't sting as bad when you lose.

On edit - Nabakov's brilliant save on Savard was the play of the game, imo.

16. Way to stack those pads, Nabby
Unfortunately, the Sharks looked a little tired tonight in their OT loss to Pittsburgh. Damn, they're only 10-1-2 against the Least now.

17. Nabakov is still underrated, and I don't know why.
I've liked him from the get go, but he was a little rough around the edges fundamental wise at first. He's fixed that, and he is solid in every way now, and spectacular more often than not.

Hockey is a bit snobbish towards Western expansion teams still (and Western teams in general at times), and I think they don't give enough credit to some of the players out there because they don't play in the "rough and tumble" east. Hopefully with the Sharks doing so well more people will notice players like Nabakov and Boyle, and no one should say anything about them not being a tough team. From what I've seen they can play the physical game as good as anyone.

I still say the Red Wings will be the team to beat, but I sure hope the Sharks are the ones to take the West.
