University of Miami Stadium Named After A-Rod
The University of Miami just named one of its stadiums after A-Rod. What do DUers think of the school doing such a thing? I opposed the idea, but not because A-Rod has admitted using steriods. I realize this was a baseball field and it seems that the University of Miami does not have any real big named baseball stars, but I think with a school so known for its athletes they could have named the field after one of the athletes that actually went to the school. In addition, I know A-Rod gave $3.9 million to the school to renovate the stadium, but once again it just seems like they could have named the stadium after one of the actual alums. So, what do others think? I know A-Rod had committeed to going to the U, but decided to go pro instead. I do not fault A-Rod for going pro I just wanted to have a conversation on the issue.

1. Somehow it fits Miami's reputation perfectly.
Besides the high profile rule breaking, none of their fans are alums either, it's perfect for them.

3. And you're a fucking idiot .... Charlie Pell ring a bell you one-toothed Gator fan?

Oh--and this UM Alum went to a school with 5NC's. Catch up some day and we'll talk.

<snip>
And in 1995, on the NBC News program ''Dateline,'' he said of his troubles at Florida (107 charges of rules violations and 59 sanctions): ''Did I violate some rules? Yes. Does that make me a cheater? If it does, yes I am. There wasn't room for anything but winning. Nothing. Winning was the sole obsession, to a fault.''

Pell became Florida's coach as several colleges were breaking National Collegiate Athletic Association rules by giving illegal aid to players. His first Florida team finished with a 0-10-1 record. The next year, Florida (8-4) played in a bowl game.

In 1984, after a 30-month investigation, the N.C.A.A. cited Florida for many violations that included spying on practices of seven opponents, making cash payments to players and providing loans to athletes.

The N.C.A.A. put Florida on probation for three years (later reduced to two).

The team was barred from bowl games and television appearances for two years and lost some athletic scholarships for four years.

11. 50:1 Florida to Miami fan ratio sounds about right
There are at least 50 Florida fans for every Miami fan. Glad you can admit the truth.

www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/acc/2008-11-12-miami-attendance_N.htm

The University of Miami has a new football home, but that doesn't mean the Hurricanes are drawing a lot of new fans.

Dolphin Stadium is bigger and cleaner and has more amenities than the Orange Bowl. But, like its predecessor, it's normally a little more than half full.

For the fourth season in a row, the Hurricanes' average home attendance will be in the 40,000-plus range. The Hurricanes would have to draw more than 69,000 fans Thursday against Virginia Tech to average 50,000 for the season. The last time Miami got a crowd that big against anyone other than Florida or Florida State was five years ago against Tennessee.

School officials point out that this year's average of 46,191 is about 3,500 better than 2007's, but part of that bump can be attributed to school officials giving free tickets to university employees for the season opener against Charleston Southern.

Giving away free tickets!

The Hurricanes have had 28 home sellouts in their history (usually when playing a team with real fans). Florida has a streak of 120 consecutive sellouts.

BTW, did the waxing of your chest hair hurt?

13. This tired argument again---
Honestly---what the fuck else you going to do on a Saturday in North Florida. Mud Whomp!

I honestly could care less how many fans show up to a game. That don't make you a better team on the field.

Listen chump. We've played you 6 times in the last decade and won 5 times. We have more NC's than you knuckleheads and have lost more NC games that you have been in.

It's on the field that counts and you chumps are still our little Bitches.

So talk all you want about fan attendance cause it don't mean squat.

14. I'm sure you're tired of it.
It's the defining characteristic of the Miami program. I wouldn't want to talk about it either if I was one of the half dozen Miami fans out there too.

16. We have a lot of "defining characteristics"
We have a whole bunch of National Championships---

We have many superstar NFL players in the NFL---

And---we've consistently beat the shit out of you guys the last couple of decades.

The Gator's defining characteristic--- That would be dropping Miami off the yearly schedule because we were beating your sorry asses year end, year out.

Who did you replace us with? Montana State---

Hence the fucking name that is set in granite--- Chickenshit Gators. Now that's a er "defining characteristic".

21. To quote Bruce Springteen...
"And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
but I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
a little of the glory of, well time slips away
and leaves you with nothing mister but
BORING stories of glory days"

Reminisce of your glory days from long ago with boring stories if it makes you feel a little better. However, all that matters is Miami is the current loser.

Scoreboard: 26-3

24. I have to disagree, A-Rod hasn't been convicted of any crime, so he doesn't really
fit in with the school's so-called "student-athletes."

4. That's a nice chunk of change he gave the school and
they did offer him a scholarship.

It doesn't bother me .. he wants to be associated with a college and it's a natural choice for him.

10. Thats pretty much SOP these days
Its all about the monetary contributions...Look at it this way..How many hospitals have named a wing after a big donor...someone who likely has never been treated there.
Hell at my University I would prefer the names be after individuals who donated. Instead the big basketball arena is named Comcast Center.

12. Maybe so
buts it's not exactly the greatest timing. I did read how A-Fraud was given a 45 second standing ovation...considering the location, that figures.

BTW, I wonder how many hospital wings have been named after admitted drug users and liars?

Didn't he donate money to Miami's stadium remodeling?? Shouldn't they name the stadium after him, too??

27. He donated to the football program.
From the internets (link doesn't work):

"Film actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (B.G.S '95) and Dany Garcia Johnson (B.B.A '92), founder of the Miami based wealth management firm JDM Partners and a member of the UM Board of Trustees have given the athletic department a gift of $1 million as part of the ongoing Football Facilities Renovation Fund. In recognition of their gift, the football locker room will be named the Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Locker Room. This is the largest donation ever by former Miami student-athletes to the athletic department."
