I'll have to be honest. I can respect that. Ignore the media and fan bombast and root for some other team. Nothing wrong with that.

8. Define "home team"
I would define home team as any a team in the metropolitan area that you lived in during your formative years as a sports fan.

I would say that the team that's merely closest to you, but perhaps based in a city dozens or hundreds of miles away would not be considered a "home team".

28. Yeah, that's a good point
I grew up in the mid-to-late 80s, in Florida. The Marlins didn't come to be until '93, and the closest team was the Braves. The distance from Miami to Atlanta is over 650 miles - am I supposed to be a Braves fan? What then happens to that allegiance when the Marlins enter the league in the Braves' division?

Anyway - I caught on as Yankees fan because they were on TV a lot even in the late 80s, when they were awful, and they had an iconic player in Don Mattingly. That's pretty much my story.

14. Okay who should I be rooting for then?
I spent my first four years in Cincinnati but spent summers with my Dad out there. I also have a ton of relatives in Cleveland and have visited there on a regular basis and spent quite a bit of time there. I have also lived in Metro DC for 35 years.
I actually do like teams from both those cities but prefer Washington teams. I think you can root for whatever team you identify with the most...be it where you grew up or where you were born or even what team you were able to watch growing up. I know a lot of people who became fans of teams like the Cowboys because they grew up in an area where they had no professional franchise and thats who they saw on TV most of the time. I actually am fine with that.
People root for who they root for. And I have to give madinmaryland props for NOT being a fairweather fan of the Cowboys. He didn't jump on them in the 90's and jump off them after they started sucking again.

22. You don't know how much joy it brings me knowing I've
touched a nerve concerning your bandwagon-jumping.

Let me guess, when the team from the (far) "EAST" plays in the Little League World Series final, you cheer for those Asian kids because they -- at least traditionally over the years -- are the most dominant and have the best chances of winning.

LOL

Now of course, the Asian team(s) cheat by stacking their squads with boys above the age limit, but that's good enough for madinmaryland who would rather be an interloper and cheer for teams with the best chances of winning, rather than do what an overwhelming number of people in communities throughout the country do.

And that's root root root for the home team.

Here's you on the bandwagon:

25. Well for one thing, paragraphs are your friends.
Second of all, what does it mean you spent your first four years in Cincinnati but spent summers there with your dad.

None of that makes sense.

But if you were trying to say you live in Cincy until you were four, and then moved to DC, then you should root for the Redskins, Bullets, Caps and Orioles.

It's so simple.

He moved back in 1980 and since then I spent my summers with him going to Reds games etc...So growing up I spent a good 1/3 of my year in Cinci, and the other 2/3 in DC. Thats why I said which should I root for?

for a long time.

Washington, DC has not has two teams to choose from for a long time.

They've had ONE team, and that's Baltimore.

So if you grow up in DC, you naturally root for the only professional baseball team around.

The Expos moved to DC a few years ago.

She should be an established Orioles fan.

75. Excuse me...I have a question...
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 01:18 AM by AsahinaKimi
Who has set up the so called rules for this ridiculous statement? I would like to know where its set in stone that I have to root for my home team?

I root for the teams I like, and have stuck by for years. I live in San Francisco and
rooted for the Lakers, I root for the VanCouver Canucks, because they were my first hockey
team I went to see. I root for the 49ers because my dad took me to games ...and I root for the Los Angeles Angels because I liked them better than any other team.

Those are my teams. Oh sure, I like the Giants sometimes..but they are not my team. When the Giants
played the Angels in the World Series I rooted for the Angels. My dad rooted for the Giants. He didn't mind we had opposing teams. He was disappointed they lost, but he was happy that I was happy that my team won.

Loyalty has to be earned. It doesn't go necessarily to where you live. Yeah, I'm proud to be an American but also proud of my Japanese and Korean roots. Who would I root for in the Olympics?
Maybe all three. It depends on who is competing. I would probably root for team USA over the other teams but why do I have to be loyal to any one team or player just because they are from my home town or not? The guy could be a complete Asshat.. but just cause he's on my hometown team I have to like him? NO, I think not.

Ok, I am done with my ranting now..:P

OH and watch it with the Asian Kids and Far East stuff.. you are bordering on making a GENERALIZE STATEMENT, usually known as ..RACIAL STEREOTYPING.

77. Where the hell did I make comments about "Asian
kids and Far East Stuff?"

I very consciousness about racial stereotyping, but you go ahead and falsely insinuate that I've made such comments AsahinaKimi forkboy.

Fuckin A.

Now as for your teams, I can't answer who you should root for because I don't know where you're from. You're all over the board with your favorites with phony Cowboys fan madinmaryland.

However, if you are indeed from San Francisco, you have no business rooting for any of those teams, with the exception of Vancouver.

You root for the Angels just because you like them better than anyone else. Oh brother. :eyes:

You root for the Fakers. :eyes:

Naturally you root for the 49ers because they're a 5-time World Champion franchise.

The only team you get slack on is Vancouver because the Bay Area only recently, within the past decade or so, got a NHL club.

Loyalty may have to be earned by human standards, but not when it comes to the home teams.

It's an unwritten mandate to root for your home town teams.

But you root for your bandwagon teams if you want.

13. Consider members of the Military
who are stationed at various locales during their careers, maybe close to a major league town but not their hometown and they maintain allegiance to "their" hometeams. You see this quite often on military bases where just about every color but those of the host city are worn by Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.

if only because there are no professional teams of any kind left out here at all. The AAA Islanders bailed as soon as minor league ball became popular on the mainland again. 49. Mostly because I remember when it was quite the opposite
save for the "Woe-riors".

Then again, Seattle has come down pretty far from the M's tying the regular-season win record, and the Seahawks in the SB three years ago, too. St. Louis' Cards and Rams have won titles within the past decade or so; only the Blues have languihsed consistently.

So maybe they do indeed suck more. But I've never even been to either, other than changing planes at STL. So they wouldn't have come to mind as quickly.

What a crushing disappointment they've been.

52. Usually a frontrunner, a fraud or a hater.
It's a deficiency of character. Almost universally, these people pick the most hated team of the city they live in just to irritate. Or they pick a lately successful team just to try and glom on to their success. I know people like this. There is no real joy for them though. Take the Giants fan I know for instance, last year they won the Super Bowl and he got to celebrate with no one at all. No one to high five, no one to drink with, no parade to go to. What good was it? It basically amounted to and meant nothing. The reverse happened for the Mets fan I know. Last year the Phillies won the World Series and this city went berserk, an outpouring of joy and love unlike anything we've seen in nearly 30 years. 2 million people celebrated on Broad Street and he got to enjoy none of it. Mocked and shunned, he could only hide in a house while we partied like madmen.

If you move to a different city you can keep your allegiances but if you are born somewhere and root for someone else, usually you're just an asshole frontrunning fraud.

54. Hell yea MrSlayer ... I can't wait for madinmaryland to read
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 11:36 PM by cboy4
your post!!

Beautifully articulate and accurately straight-to-the point words from a Philadelphia fan who explained in simple terms why you root for the teams where you grew up.

Just keep in mind that madinmaryland -- the bandwagon-jumping Cowgirls fans, who only recently started "cheering" for them after he learned they had five rings, is going to go apeshit and attempt to make excuses about why your post is wrong.

In fact, I'm sure he's already read this and letting himself down easy that he's been defeated.

I know we'll be arguing about other things as the year progresses! HA

But for now,

WELL DONE!!!

on edit........typos because I'm tired as hell

55. actually
Mim's been a Cowboys fan for 30 years--told me this a long while back. Doesn't sound like bandwagon jumping to me. And yes, he told me awhile back that he lived in Texas (among other places) as well. But hey, don't let actual facts get in the way of your insults. Its so much easier to just make up shit about people..:eyes:

56. Being a fan of the Cowboys for 30 years .. especially if you're
not from anywhere close, certainly doesn't qualify a person to cheer for that team. :eyes:

Let me show you who's eligible, besides the obvious fans who grew up in Texas:

We're talking Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas

These people have license to cheer for the Dallas Cowboys.

Madinmaryland is an interloper and is simply trying to cash in on Dallas' success even though he has no ties to the Metropolitan area.

Even if what he says that he lived in Dallas is true (riiiiight), he's ineligible.

And stop defending him. It's pathetic.

59. I'm defending him
because you are being a completely unreasonable jerk. Maybe if you stopped making up shit about someone you don't really know (and I don't know him that well..but much better than you apparantly) I wouldn't be so pissed off. I have a thing about unfair character assassination. I'm just like that. Of course I'm sure since you seem to be unable to comprehend the idea of personal integrity you no doubt think this is a flaw..:eyes:

63. It's funny enough when you have someone (you) who
embellishes the truth about me go on and on about a subject.

It becomes downright hilarious when all of the whining and defending involves a football team said embellisher hates.

But it's pure hilarity when the embellisher is transformed into the wing man of a person who is dishonest about my record and tries to push my buttons.

But then again, maybe it's apropos, considering you're almost as bad when it comes to being dishonest about what I write.

67. What are you talking about?
They almost made it to the Super Bowl a couple of years ago and were edged out of the playoffs this past season.

It's astonishing they haven't won with the talent they've had .. and I agree with Jerry Jones (BARF), who said there must be a chemistry problem.

So absolutely can someone be called fair weather .. especially when said team is tied for second with the most Super Bowl wins at five.

69. I'm not the dishonest person in this forum
Not even Upton seems to say that. Only you. You are a classic case in projection. As I said I have a problem with character assassination. Though that seems to be something you enjoy, which is pretty sad actually.
I enjoy good natured trash talking, but I don't enjoy being mean nasty and dishonest without reason. Apparantly, you do.

57. I've known the cockroaches here for 30+ years.
The ones that I know all jumped on the bandwagon with Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach. The younger generation of cockroach jumped on during the Aikman and Emmitt years. A bandwagon jumper is a bandwagon jumper and no length of time erases it. And they all hide when the team sucks, stowing that Cowgirl attire away until the team gets better or supporting an entirely different team. It's been particularly fun the past few years with Romo. They come out and show their stuff and talk shit and act like they're great only to get smashed in the playoffs or embarrassed in the final game of the season and miss the playoffs. This is no defense.

60. If he became a fan because of Staubach in the 70's
and remained so, can't say that really bothers me. Alot of people become fans of teams because of players they admire growing up.
I have a hard time not respecting Staubach myself even though I despise the Cowpies. Just beccause I dislike a team, doesn't mean I should disrespect someone's choice to be a fan of that team for their own personal reasons. Fancy that, I respect my FRIEND's choices and don't think its my job to tell him what to think, believe or whom to root for. I'm a bad liberal that way, I am.:sarcasm:

If they happen to root for a team I hate. Since there is only one team I hate and that's only during the third Saturday in November, I generally just call them FANS.

Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 01:31 AM by AsahinaKimi
Why should you even care, why a person choses to root for the team they chose to root for? People have different reasons for chosing the teams they chose. Who cares if the team they root is not to your liking? In the wide world of sports, why does it even matter?
