Hmm. Mike Schmidt gives the thumbsup for the Roid-ragers going into the HOF..
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2009/news/story?id=3915892&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines

Mike Schmidt knows he isn’t speaking for all living Hall of Fame players, but if Alex Rodriguez joins their club someday, Schmidt said he would welcome him to the fraternity.

“Would I welcome him? Yeah, I will—if he got elected to the Hall of Fame,” Schmidt said Wednesday after he checked into the Philadelphia Phillies’ spring training camp as a special instructor.

..."I’m a guy, I always seem to be walking right on top of, right down the middle of the fence,” he said. “I can understand the old hard-line guys who use the words, ‘He cheated, he cheated, he cheated.’ And the other guys that go, ‘It was a culture thing back then, and if you played, you’d have been tempted, too.’”

In fact, when Schmidt was asked directly if he thought he’d have gotten caught up in trying performance-enhancing drugs had they been part of his era, he answered: “Most likely. Why not?”

“A term that I think has been overused a lot, especially by Alex, is ‘culture’—culture of the era he played in,” Schmidt said. “We had a culture when I played. There was a culture in the era when Babe Ruth played. And in the ‘60s, there was a culture. It’s just that way in life. And apparently—I wasn’t involved, but from hearing everybody—that was the culture of the ‘90s and the early 2000s. The temptation had to be tremendous to the young men playing major league baseball back then.”

..snip

Mike Schmidt would have done roids?? Wonder if he did the drug of his time.. "greenies"

One can only wonder.

1. He cheated, plain and simple, he had an advantage others didn't have,
or wouldn't take. Bonds, Clemens and A-Hole all cheated...and the sad thing is that they didn't need to...they would have made the HOF anyway...greed, stupidity and arrogance.

4. Why wouldn't he?
Again, why limit a ban on "performance enhancers" to steroids? If the defining point of cheating is that one player that used a substance had an advantage over a player that didn't, then eliminate everyone that ever touched amp, steroids, ephedrine, caffeine, creatine...see where I'm going with this?

5. Then Schmidt is a phony
He absolutely refuses to vote for Ron Santo for the Hall, and yet he supports cheaters? Tells me all I need to know about Schmidt.

11. Great interview knucklehead. Did you read it??
Sad to break it to you but you ain't the center of my universe. I don't anxiously check in waiting breathlessly for a response to a post. You should get out of your basement.

- Schmidt's stats are legit. bonds aren't.
- Schmidt isn't a liar. bonds is.
- Schmidt did not embarrass himself, his family, his team or his fans. bonds does that everytime he makes a public appearance.
- Schmidt does not need synchophants to make his career.

If Schmidt had taken steroids, bonds would be whoring himself out to any team who would give him an at bat so he could pursue the homerun king, because if Schmidt had taken steroids he'd have 900 home runs and would be your hero, not mine.

Great Interview. Hard to imagine sport's reporters wanting to talk to a legitimate home run hitter about current events. Schmidt. Honest. Articulate. Thought provoking. (Checkout the last two paragraphs synchophant.) And now that the interview in question is over it can be repeated. Schmidt is the greatest home run hitter ever and the greatest third baseman ever and bonds is living proof that weak losers pursue statistics like narcissists pursue mirrors. Like cboy pursues attention.

I hope bonds doesn't read this. He'd find me and headbutt me and I would not survive. Nay. Moby Dick would not survive. And some wonder why.

So Lad, I've left you an opening (leading to a brickwall) to pursue, just so you can embarrass yourself once again. If you'd like to chat more about the interview and your knucklehead perceptions thereof lets rock and roll. I'll get back to you at my convenience. Anything to get your mind off the steroid monster.

13. I enjoyed the smaller crowds
Weather was great, the beer ice cold, but I left before the wunderkind had the opportunity to share themselves with the crowds and lordy how they love to share. Arthritis has kicked my Ass since Friday night. The flareups are more painful then cboy posts.

14. Blah blah yea, yea center of universe, who cares...get to the
the important part about Schmidt saying, "...most likely, why not..."

Oh that's right, you IGNORED the important part.

"In fact, when Schmidt was asked directly if he thought he’d have gotten caught up in trying performance-enhancing drugs had they been part of his era, he answered: “Most likely. Why not?”

****and****

Schmidt said he would welcome him to the fraternity.

“Would I welcome him? Yeah, I will—if he got elected to the Hall of Fame,” Schmidt said Wednesday after he checked into the Philadelphia Phillies’ spring training camp as a special instructor.

===========================================================================

This is completely in contrast to your hard-line cheating mantra BOSSHOG.

And now you're going to give him a free pass for saying he mostly likely would have done steroids?

And he would welcome Barry into the Hall of Fame.

I can't believe you've ignored these two key points.

18. Mike Schmidt is a sympathizer. That's the point Einstein,
not whether he cheated or not.

Although it makes one wonder.

16. My you are easy
I ignored?? I refer you to the last paragraph of my previous post. I gave you an opening to embarrass yourself and you came through. Not only that but you also made an ass of yourself. But you are good at that.

Did he say he "most likely would have done steroids?" No. But you value lies. You not only give a pass to those who tell them you freely tell them yourself.

Would he welcome barry? If he got elected!! The actions of a gentleman.

bonds tells lies and you give him comfort. Schmidt gracefully and honestly answers reporters questions and gives a history lesson relative to different pressures that athletes are under from era to era and you trash him. No need to continue to share your values. Notice the contrast in venues. bonds-courthouse. Mike-ballfield with his team.

I refer you back to the interview with Michael Jack, especially the last two paragraphs. And did you notice that picture of the 3-time NL MVP, World Series MVP, 10 time Gold Glove recipient (in 11 years.) Notice the normalcy of the size of his head.

I don't have to make a career of defending my Baseball Hero, but I do enjoy sharing his accomplishments and the positive influence he has left on the game. Thanks for that.

FYI. My Wife is the Center of My Universe.

19. The actions of a gentleman ... I agree.....Does that mean you're
not a gentleman because you don't agree with Michael Schmidt?

I personally think you're a good person, but I don't think you're being consistent.

You're a hardliner when it comes to cheating, so I would assume you'd cringe to hear what Mike said about how he'd probably try steroids .. and perhaps offer at the very least some gentle criticism.

It's true that Schmidt is not on the list of 100+ positive testers from '03 (or whenever MLB did the testing that A-Rod failed), but he's clearly not as outraged as you are about the controversy surrounding Bonds.

That's what I'm introducing, and you turn your back on the quotes from Mike Schmidt.

You can't possibly question my character when you're signing off on a double standard.

10. Schmidt has admitted to doing greenies.
But they didn't speed up your injury recovery time or improve your eyesight or put 40 pounds of muscle on you. It's not quite the same.

21. This is what I love about the sports forum - the title of this thread!!!
I feel like going to my next book club meeting and dramatically announcing, "Mike Schmidt gave the thumbsup for the Roid Rangers going into the HOF - what do you guys think of THAT?" and just watch the blank stares.

I feel like talking only in sports headlines now, for about two weeks.

23. That would be cool!
The titles of these threads are almost like found poetry. Maybe I should consider them for my writer's group.

I have lots of single friends who use me -TOTALLY USE ME -as a wingman at bars. I reel the unsuspecting victims in with the sports talk. Then my friend swoops in for the kill.
