Let the Spending frenzy begin: Redskins/Snyder signs Haynesworth to $100 million

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Moving swiftly in the first hours of free agency, the Washington Redskins opened their deep pockets and snagged perhaps the biggest name available: All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

The longtime Tennessee Titans defensive tackle agreed to a seven-year deal worth approximately $100 million early Friday morning. The Redskins, known for their expediency in such matters, wasted no time scheduling a 5 p.m. news conference for their latest marquee signing.

Haynesworth's deal came within hours of another Redskins blockbuster: a six-year, $54 million agreement to re-sign cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

A stout, sack-producing interior lineman is just what the Redskins have needed. Haynesworth had a career-high 8-1/2 sacks last year, more than one-third of Washington's team total (24). The 27-year-old lineman is 6-foot-6, weighs 320 pounds and has 24 sacks in seven NFL seasons since the Titans drafted him in the first round out of the University of Tennessee in 2002

1. I seem to remember hearing the same thing about a decade ago...

...when the 'Skins signed Dan Wilkinson and Dana Stubblefield. That didn't work quite as planned.

Oh - and how are they fitting all these big names under the salary cap?

2. From what I understand they are dumping Shawn Springs and

renegotiating the salaries of several players, including defensive end Andre Carter, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin and left tackle Chris Samuels.

They also released Marcus Washington.

Haynesworth played terrific last year. We shall see.

4. Uhmm. From a Redskin's fan I talked to this morning, he was scratching

his head about this move. I thought there defense was their forte last year.

The Redskins D had 24 total. They need a good pass rusher.

Snyder thinks that throwing money around will cure every ill. Maybe a Redskin fan can set me straight, but wasn't their problem last year mostly on the offensive side of the football?

Even though their defense was ranked in the top 10--there were several games where their defense blew it in the end..Including that last game at the 49's!
They really do need a good pass rusher.

Surely Jason Campbell isn't the long term answer.

Singing Haynesworth isn't going to change a basic fact..The Redskins are going to continue to miss the playoffs, not because they're not a decent team but because they play in the toughest division in football.

11. Snyder and Company seem to be planning on Campbell as their

long term solution at QB. In defence of Campbell (TZ i'm sure will take note of that), he has had a different offensive/QB coordinator nearly every single year of his pro career. Think he made have had the same issues in college.

BTW, did you just admit that the NFC is the toughest division in football?? :thumbsup:

12. They beat the Eagles twice last year.

And the Eagles weren't that bad. They SHOULD have beaten the Giants once. The problem with Jason Campbell last year was he had very poor offensive line protection. The offensive line had many many injury issues.

Cornelius Griffin and Kedric Golston did next to nothing in the middle. They got no rush out of the front four last year, and having Haynesworth in the middle will make life easier for Carter and Taylor on the ends.
Now that the defense is addressed, they need to look at O-Linemen in the draft. Campbell may not be the long term answer, but not even Joe Montana himself could have withstood the pass rush that was in Campbell's face all season.

13. I think it's insane to commit that much salary cap money to one player

There's no guarantee any player can ever match the success experienced with a former team.

I'm not against the signing -- just that amount money.

14. I really don't think there is going to be as big as frenzy

as we have seen in the past. Teams have gotten pretty good at managing the cap and locking up their own players. There are very few of the teir one Free Agents, this year. Besides that, most of the teams with playoff success are the ones that tend to avoid over paying for FAs.
