Benefits of POD
as a game publisher you need to find "cheap" ways to get the product to market, so I am using lulu. Now folks here is teh benefit, I made a MAJOR goof, and since my print runs have been VERY SMALL (how does six books a run strike you as?) I was able to correct the problem. Yes I will have to eat, worst case, 11 deffective units, but that is far better than ... drum roll 300 to 500 which is the average in the industry. And no I am not to the point of needing to print 1000, let alone 100,000 but do throw me into that briar patch.

1. The drawback
is cover price, which is higher for POD books.

For books in general, there other problems, such as getting bookstores to carry them and to treat them the way they treat other books.

In spite of all of which, POD is a wonderful innovation for small publishers.

A while ago, I wrote a piece about POD, based on what I knew then, and put it on my Web site. It's probably somewhat out of date, but I think the basics are still correct: http://www.dvorkin.com/pod.htm

2. Yes there are drawbacks
but as a small game publisher they are kidn of overcome by the fact that game stores really don't care. Now getting Barnes and Noble to carry them might be tricky but my market, well once I can I will move to "regular print"

4. Just remember yuio DO all the marketing
speaking off, I think you will be pleased with the quality of the product, but big recomendation, do a single test run of one book before you go "to print." That is your galley that you can edit at your leisure
