Your friends here at DU have launched our new online literary magazine!
Those of us who visit the Writing Forum have lunched our first issue of our online literary magazine, The Necessary Language. You can visit it (and we hope you will) at www.thenecessarylanguage.com

We started this as a way for us unpublished and under-published writers to get a forum for our work. We also see it as a learning experience, so we do not edit pieces submitted.

The magazine will be quarterly, and if you’re interested in submitting to future issues, you can PM me (although I leave tomorrow for 3 weeks in Europe!) and I can give you more information. We ask that submissions be sent in plain text to necessarylanguage@yahoo.com

Currently we take fiction—short stories, short shorts, poetry, artwork and photos. In the future we may take non-fiction and essays if there’s a great interest in this.

In the meantime, have a look, and tell your friends. We want EVERYONE to read this!

Na shledanou!

(Note to Mods—this is being posted in a few forums so we can reach as many of our fellow DU’ers as possible—please don’t lock! Thanks!)

:bounce: :loveya: :hi:

12. Darn.
I've already read the stories and poetry there, and I enjoyed them so much that I wanted to read them again.

Maybe you can tell me what the story guidelines are. For instance, are all fiction genres accepted?

Yay! Now to bookmark it.

"Kazuko" is the most realistic story I've ever read, and the writing style is totally unique. Wonderful can't begin to describe "Kazuko." Why aren't you famous, 180?

24. Can anyone tell me
how to go about submitting a story to Necessary Language? Do we just email the story to the addy shown at the website, or do we email joeybee for permission first? If we are supposed to just go ahead and submit, do we format the story for paragraphing, italics and the like? If so, do we use real HTML with < >? I understand submissions should be in plain text, so I assume we should use HTML tags for italics and so forth when we submit. Yes? No?

I know joeybee is out of the country, but I thought maybe one of you guys could clue me in so I'd get an idea of what's what.

Thanks. :-)

26. 180...
Thanks. I was getting a story ready, and it dawned on me I didn't know how to go about submitting it and how to format it and stuff.

It's not an emergency, of course. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I can wait for joybee to respond if he sees my other post, or you could PM me the info if you wouldn't mind. Either way is okay with me.

30. WesDem
Thanks. :-) Do you know how submissions should be formatted for italics, paragraphing and the like? (Or don't paragraphs have to be tagged for HTML?) And does The Necessary Language use brackets for HTML codes as DU does, or does it use < >?

I emailed the questions to The Necessary Language, so if you're not sure or would rather joeybee address them, I don't mind waiting till he replies.

I'm looking forward to the spring issue of TNL, even if I myself chicken out and don't submit anything. :P It's a wonderful opportunity for DUers to showcase their work.

31. Best is not formatted except for paragraph breaks
The formatting seems to get stripped out, anyway, and lost paragraph breaks are really a pain. But once the piece is up, you have the chance to look it over and specify changes, so any jazzy formatting you want done can be done. Be sure to put the text inside the body of an email and not as an attachment. No chickening out! :spank: Did you see the new DU journals? How cool is that?
