Am I supposed to wait for a rejection letter or response before submitting my work to the next venue?

Is it common for freelance writers (non-fiction, essay, review) to fire off multiple queries simultaneously?

I suppose the fear is getting accepted by more than one magazine... has this ever happened to you?

1. Magazine submission guidelines

will usually specify if they want exclusivity. I have some notes from a writing workshop, but I'm on my way out the door.
