the contract before you sign. Normally when a book has been accepted, an agent
is happy to handle the negotiations for you, and they might be able to get you
a better deal than you can get on your own.

11. Well, not really
Your "book" is getting printed. Not published.

Publishers in the publishing business pay you for your work, not the other way around.

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10211

This is just another way for people to rip off people who want to believe they're "published authors," when, in fact, they're just paying for the printing.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but reality is reality. I hope you didn't send any kind of real money, and that you don't get burned.

Remember - real publishers BUY your work and PAY YOU to publish and distribute your book (it becomes a book when it's finally published - until then, it's a manuscript).

12. I know someone who's using a Print on Demand outfit
to publish her book. It had been previously published by a conventional publisher,
but because it's a very brainy and philosophical book about an esoteric technical
subject, it's not something for mall bookstores. When it went out of print, she
published a new edition herself using a print-on-demand outfit. You can get it
at Amazon, and she promotes it herself through her website and in ads in specialized
trade journals, and she takes a few copies to industry conferences she attends.
She's very happy with the arrangement.

13. Sure, that's a viable alternative when
the publishing rights revert to the author after the contract runs its course with the publisher.

But, this time around, it's also printing, though - not publishing, although the book you refer to has already been published. Calling it "publishing" doesn't make it so, any more than calling a large black housecat a black panther makes it a real black panther.

Printing is not publishing.

Anyone can get anything listed on amazon.com. That's hardly an accomplishment.

Just remember - real publishers BUY your work, and rip-off printers make YOU PAY to get it printed.

Never confuse the two.

Sounds like your friend, given the nature of her work, has done a very smart thing, keeping it alive. That's one of the nice things about having your rights revert to you. That's standard in a publishing contract, though, so she's a pro, and good for her.

14. Exactly, money should always flow toward the author...
never the other way around.

Advances(on royalties)are paid to the author...royalties are paid to the author, expenses for marketing/pr are covered for the author by the publisher.
