She lies beneath the fig tree


and remembers the shops

and the vendors

and the talk



of things that are about to change

and remembers the fear.



Before her father lay bleeding beside her.


She remembers the quiet
the silence

at night

before these things

brought new silence.


She hears the vehicles
roll by

carrying death
and

foreigners

to change her world.




The old silence returns

and she gets up

to take her baby

water.

I see the arm

under the door
of the Humvee

the fingers still grasp
and grab
for things
never known

I see the rest of her

across the street

Can't you hear the souls go by?

Don't you see the children march?

Don't you hear the daughters

cry for their fathers?

Their brothers?

Their Mothers?


Be quiet.

Listen.

There's a war going on.
