Question about true crime research

I have a great idea for a true crime book. I started doing the preliminary research, but I am at a loss on how to go about getting the trial transcripts and police reports. Do I file an FOIA? If I do, where should I file it? Do I need the specific names of the trials? If so, where do I find this information? How about the police reports? Do I file an FOIA with the police?

There are no "how-to" books on this subject at the bookstores, although I did order an out-of-print book that combines true crime with how to write crime fiction.

1. If the case has gone to trial, the transcripts or tapes may be ordered

the Court for a fee. The Police reports should be open to the public, but may need to go in person to order the same. call them and ask. You will need case names and probably docket numbers.

2. Transcripts are the "property" of the assigned "Court Reporter"

and are avaiilable for a fee. Check out these websites for further info.

3. Ease of access to police reports seems to depend on the jurisdiction

for example - this one seems to make it real easy;

Worst case would be to have to call/go-to the PD where the repoort was filed and ask how to get a copy.

5. Remember ... FOI requests will carry hefty copying costs.

They charge plenty for each copy, I suspect in hopes of discouraging applications. With your FOI request, see if they will allow you to review the material on site so you can take notes and see what you actually need copied.
