Is "writing software" necessary?

I've never considered this until recently. I've always used a standard word processing program. How many of you out there use writing software, what writing software do you use, and do you think it's necessary?

1. Screen writing

I don't, but then again, I mostly write literary fiction.

I understand that because of the strange format, special software is essential for screen writing, tv writing and play writing.

2. Nope. I use a standard word processor

Word, in my case.

I can't see why anyone would use specialized software, except, as HampdenRice says, for specialized formatting purposes, such as screenwriting.
