The enemy is sneaking, creeping
looking for place to hide,
in nearby tree or window high.

Typical day for us.
Another patrol,checkpoint guard
or distributing foodstuffs.

Small pop rings out
can barely hear the sound
Wet spray hits my face before I hear it, what's that taste?
My battle buddy drops to the ground.

A sudden slump and he's a crumpled mess
Hole where his eye once was,
Missing blood and bone
Grab his face. Where's the rest?

Chaos rules and I return the fire
Spraying lead all directions, hitting nothing
Once again sniper fires.

My turn now, slug hits my chest.
Before I hear the sound,
It ignores the plates in my vest.

Brothers rush to me as I fade, screaming I hear.
And more pop, pop, pop. The sound we live for and that we fear.
Just wanted to man my post, do my duty, protect our hosts.
Just one man with a deadly eye,
reminds me that they didn't want us here.
