Well well, three novels so far, and these guys are STILL loud
so started plotting the next one... while working on the final revision of number three.

They are LOUD... and who knows, these are NOT american stories, so it is time to start offing some of these guys. Hell, one of them made it for plot reasons last time around. But in this book perhaps two of them will decide to bow out by the end, or perhaps more.

No, not an effort to make them shut up... just that heroes at times do die. And it is getting to that point.

Oh and yes, I did write a couple death scenes already, as sketches. So I know I will cry when they go. They have shared my life and dreams and yes, nightmares, for years now. But all good characters do die. And a few of these guys are quite broken anyway.

1. I see I'm not the only one
to get emotional about killing off a main character

I'm afraid I don't know your novels, so is it possible to simply send them far, far away instead of killing them?

2. No, these are set in a world at war.
to quote either folks in real life, or one of my characters... young people die in war, and damn it there is nothing you can do to change that.

One of them may also bow out in the midst of heroics.

But heroes rarely are given a price for being idiots.

The last novel this particular character only lived for plot reasons. If the plot didn't require it. he'd be cold, dead and buried by now.

3. Okay, thanks for the rundown.
I suppose you could give them the "bittersweet" ending, by the government giving them a deskjob, or put on leave, then they go and get killed by a falling brick or a drunk-driver, or some other "freak accident." Then again, I don't know your motives for killing them, so I'm sure you'll come up with something good :)
