Have I mentioned how much at times I hate this?

Yet, you need to do it. It is critical.

I just finished putting the last touch to the short story I have been working on. It will go into a deep freeze for a couple of weeks... before the last editing pass...

I never, EVER, send a first draft... EVER.

This one is a first contact story... but guess what? This is not a first contact with the little green men from Mars. We are the little green men from Mars. Fun story... and yes Columbus comes to mind... ah the joys of discovery.

1. Editing revs me up

I love tweaking the words, the scene, the whole chapter or the entire plot. It's probably because my first draft is a "pour it out on the page" type draft where the characters and the plot are still pretty two dimensional. Editing becomes a very satisfying activity when it give you so many opportunities to flesh out the story.

There is one facet of editing I don't particularly like, and that's cutting words because the story is to large. Once I get started with it, it begins to feel like a word game which has its pluses, but I practically have to promise myself a box of chocolates just to get started.
