Sen. Gene Therriault is moving to get Salvia divinorum banned in Alaska?
I was told AK is moving towards banning SD, but I haven't seen anything specific. A google search yielded nothing that I could see. Any AK DUers out there know more about this?

Thanks!

1. Yes, it's true. Here is the Republican press release
Senator Therriault Moves to Outlaw Dangerous Hallucinogenic Drug
SB 313 Bans ''Sally D''
Released: April 5, 2006

(Juneau) - Sen. Gene Therriault (R-North Pole) introduced legislation today through the Senate State Affairs Committee to ban the hallucinogen Salvia Divinorum.

Known as "Sally D" on the street, Salvia Divinorum is part of the Lamiaceae family of plants. It is grown primarily in Mexico and can be shipped or sold over the counter to anyone 18 years or older. The plant leaves, which look much like marijuana, can be eaten or smoked.

Salvia causes unpredictable physiological and psychological effects and erratic behavior in the user. Delaware has recently acted on what is being called Brett's Law after a promising young man who used the drug-committed suicide.

"Even the buyers and sellers of this substance urge great caution with its use, and yet our young people can order it with just the click of a mouse," Sen. Therriault said.

The website for educating teens about drugs (www.intheknowzone.com) explains the drug ingested by the Mazatec Indians in the mountains of Mexico to induce visions is now being used in the United States recreationally. The website cautions that "many are getting hurt" and warns that "Head shops that hype the benefits of Salvia are not telling the whole story. Depression and schizophrenia are also real risks of Salvia abuse."

Sen. Therriault introduced SB 313 through the committee he chairs because the deadline for personal legislation has passed.

"I am confident that my colleagues will support placing this drug in the same illegal category as mescaline and peyote. That is where this highly toxic substance, now banned in over ten major countries and two other states, definitely belongs," Therriault said.

SB 313 was referred to the Senate Health, Education & Social Services and Judiciary committees.

3. As a salvia psychonaut, I can tell you that this press release is bullSHI*

The only people getting hurt are the idiots who try to walk around and stumble over a table...but that's no dif from alchohol. As for unpredictable, hardly - at least for me. A salvia trip is short lived and while each trip is often vastly different from others, the general effects are the same - vivid closed eye hallucinations and occasional fractal circuses... I hate their propaganda. As with anything else, be careful. www.sagewisdom.org has some of the best research on the subject, and anyone who is curious should carefully read the information there before making any decisions on whether it is right for them..

17. Sure it does
Salvia is green. Marijuana is green. Hence, salvia looks just like marijuana.

Blowing that theory out of the water: it's not even the same shade of green!

5. I'm curious too.
I can't find anything on the website that he links to that says anything about the stuff. On a shallower note--what a goofy looking guy!

6. I smoked some once - I was higher than an acid trip
It only lasted for a few minutes though. I felt like I was alone in the universe and had been since the beginning of time and would continue to be until it's end. It was disconcerting to say the least.

10. My wife...
described being caught behind some organic membrane before being dropped into a primordial pool/pond. What's amazing is how vivid the hallucinations are... You aren't an observer, like with mushrooms or lsd, you are a participant in the world around you.

8. On one of my trips...
I found myself as part of a brick road running through a pristine, shiny little town. I was made of bricks and was part of the road... Then came a swooshing sound from the right.. and the road was unzipping... it hit me, and I was unzipped too...

Amazing... Personally, I find it great for deep meditation and and overcoming the ego. But it's DEFINATELY not a party drug, and not for everyone.

16. Sen. Gene Therrialt should be banned for being harmful to one's health!
He's selling snake-oil!

On a salvia tripping note, my step daughter reported tripping on the stuff once. She claimed to be able to see all of her lives, both past, present and future. She chose to travel to a distant future life, and felt immediately sad because she fully understood that her current body, the one tripping on salvia, was stuck so far in the brutal past-quite near stone age times! She did not want to come back to the here and now but eventually the salvia wore off and back she came. Those who were with her as she did the salvia said she went from seated on the sofa to prone on the floor for a couple of minutes (at most), before she woke up. To her memory the trip lasted far longer than a couple of minutes.

This surely does not sound like the kind of drug a sensible person would consider doing while operating a moving vehicle, nor does it appear to have an addictive quality that might change a personality enough to prompt a steady user to go out and rob folks for another 'fix'. I'm of the opinion that caffeine is a far more dangerous drug than is salvia divinorum.

I am strongly against these fear mongers such as Sen. Gene Therrialt who want to outlaw stuff that needn't ought to be outlawed. Our boys and girls in blue have MORE than enough on their hands to handle as it is.
