Just got back from doing some recording at Hempfest on Saturday and Sunday. Besides being a great event in general, Randi Rhodes appeared on the main stage and was brilliant (as usual). But what was great was that she revealed that after 15 years without partaking, she opted in to a little of the herb before coming on stage today. The crowd cheered her on. Besides several pics, I also recorded some pretty decent video of Randi at the Air America booth.
What was really cool is that I have two complete John Sinclair performances on video recorded on Saturday and Sunday. I pulled Saturday's performance into Final Cut last night and aside from one glitch in my tape, it came out great - especially the audio (thanks to investing in a decent shotgun mic). Fighting the extremes in light and shadow left the vid quality something less than perfect, but it's pretty good footage overall.
Both days were extremely well attended. There were people representing all age groups, and many different social subsets, ranging from tattooed and pierced twenty-somethings, to elderly people you would otherwise expect to see enjoying the senior's menu at your local Dennys. The atmosphere was festive, peaceful and there were smiles everywhere.
The police were present but surprisingly cool, and though large volumes of cannabis smoke wafted freely on the breeze, the police did not seem interested in busting people.
This was one of the best weekends of the summer!
