What does marijuana cost?
I'm not that old...31, but I have not "heard" about pot prices in a long time. Today, reports came out that pot is the #1 cash crop in the US. How much is the basic- no frills variety? Not requesting that anyone give any info that could get them into trouble. I dont even know if the question is legal under DU regs.

In the event that my original question is not kosher or legal, does anyone have secondhand knowledge if the price has changed in the past 15 years? Just curious- not shopping.

2. a quarter oz typically costs $70-80 here in Norcal....
Edited on Mon Dec-18-06 02:37 PM by mike_c
I remember $20 oz prices, back in the late 60s and early 70s. Of course it was mostly ditch weed compared to the superb bud our local growers produce.

4. Some of my friends pay $100 per 1/4oz
and $350 per oz. It's usually good stuff, but the price is outrageous. The price has about doubled in 15 years.

However, some thrifty folks with slightly green thumbs don't pay anywhere near that price.

5. I have no idea, but
I would say price depends upon availability. But I believe if you took the average cigarette usage and took a certain percentage as a guide, you could deteremine how much you might be able to make taxing legal marijuana. Percentage could be determined conservatively by finding out how many tons of marijuana was confiscated by law enforcement over the year.

6. 15 years ago
in Oregon an eighth would run about $35. Last year in SF the going rate was $50. So I've heard. Ahem.

I don't know that there's been much change in quality/potency since the 90s, but based on what people say there's a huge difference between the 70s and now.

And Amsterdam cannibis compared to anything stateside? No contest.

Again: So I've heard. Ahem.

7. I haven't bought any here in a while,
but the last time I did it was about $40 an eighth. Pot is a very prominent cash crop in Alaska, as well. Some of you may be aware of the Matanuska Thunderf**k. :smoke:

50 miles north of the Mexican border is about $160 an ounce. It's the very same stuff that used to $10 back when I used to smoke.

11. Since you said "cost"...
I had some free time when I was stuck in Fresno last September, so I took a little trip through Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. While enjoying the view at one of those scenic overlooks on the Kings Canyon highway, I heard a helicopter & watched as it dropped a huge bundle of something next to the river about 1/2 mile below me. I had to look a little closer when I drove down into the canyon. I found about a dozen armed uniformed men guarding about six flatbed trucks filled with freshly harvested 6 ft. tall marijuana plants. One of the men told me they "were having an operation", "getting rid of some plants", and that I had to leave immediately.

A little research on the web told me that Mexican drug gangs conduct growing operations in our national parks and wilderness areas, leaving behind a poisoned, polluted mess after harvest. I know this isn't precisely the question you asked, but one of the true costs of marijuana is ruined wilderness and parkland that tightened budgets can't even begin to clean up...

And, yeah, I know what y'all are going to say, and you're entirely correct -- if growing were legal & taxed we wouldn't see the crime and the mess. Even though I personally dislike smoking this shit, I think we're on the same page on this issue.

12. thanks for expanding on the question
I wonder if the use and abuse of other drugs would decrease if pot were legal. It might help to undermind some parts of the criminal black market that the criminalization causes.

14. Pot should be legalized
Tobacco is responsible for over 400,000 deaths per year in the US and 1.5 million around the world. Of course, the second number is not documented as much as in the US. Why is pot smoking a crime?

13. Cost of ruined wilderness and parkland
one of the true costs of marijuana is ruined wilderness and parkland

That is not a cost of marijuana. That is a cost of prohibition. Why can't people distinguish that difference?

32. My Dad never smoked a joint in his life---
But after he discovered a 1 acre patch across the creek from land he rented he took the Sheriff down to pull it up.As they pulled it up the cop talked about how much it was worth.
My Dad quickly realized that 1 ac. of weed yielded more profit than 30 ac of soybeans. He want legalization-- granting farmers a license to grow so much, sell to uncle sam,and have him sell it in retail stores--- reaping the money that is now going out of the country----
yes,my patch,one of 20 that year.
over 30 years has passed. I am immune from prosecution.

18. Well...
The typical unit is the eighth, not the ounce or even the quarter oz. Marijuana prices for an eighth in the US for decent stuff is $40-60 retail.

20. ganja costs depend on where you live.
In central Texas, you can get an ounce of better than average for as low as $60; lesser commercial can go for $40/oz. I believe what High Times said a few years back: anything over $100 per quarter ounce is wasted money and consumer vanity. South Texas has been for years about the cheapest region for buying commercial (imported from Mexico) marijuana. The region is a massive conduit for national distribution. For example, marijuana will be trucked into the Houston area where it is broken down into lots of several hundred pounds, before being driven by passenger car loads to Central Florida where the old smuggling/prohibition routes in Florida re-distribute it to the eastern seaboard.

Increasingly, the stuff is compacted by arbor press into hard cakes. This to better escape detection. If you grow your own, be aware that possession with intent to distribute will get your house/real estate confiscated, especially if local law enforcement is unusually corrupt. This is why most ganja grown in the U.S.A. is done in RENTED urban warehouses.

I'm originally from Texas and that stuff you're talking about is pretty much shit. Unless it comes in from the north but the price goes up to $60 for an eighth.

21. South Shore, MA
Low-Mid Grade (seeds) - 5-10 a gram... 20-35 an 8th, 100-150 an ounce

Danks, Hydro, Outdoors.. Sensimilla (seedless.. orange outdoors or indoors.. AKA: Beasters, kind buds) - 10-20 a gram.. 35-50 an 8th, 220-300 an ounce.

Headdies (Extremely potent, cannabis cup winning material) - 20-35 a gram. 50-80 an 8th, and 350 to 600 an ounce.

Keep in mind cape cod may very well be one of th emost expensive, and exploited markets in newengland for marijuana, but theres a good breakdown last i heard.

Pretty much a standard price for pretty good stuff here. When I was in North Carolina people were paying 40-50 for ditch weed ("the brown frown"), I hope things have gotten better there.

23. It's not lucrative enough for legalization

If it were more expensive...

If it had to be pumped out of the ground and transported by tanker..

If it was in the Middle East, and we had to send innocent Americans to fight for control of it...

And Big Oil would be the ones that profitted from it...then it would be legal

30. It is very lucrative
Medical marijuana shops have jumped from virtually none to 200 in Los Angeles in the last year. Of course the federal government still gets in the way but even still, business is booming. There was an article in the last issue of Rolling Stone about it.
