The Supreme Court has in theory at least authorized use of illegal substances as long as they have a legitimate use in the religion. The case they examined in particular was hallucinogenic tea called hoasca. According to findlaw.com "The Court so ruled notwithstanding the fact that hoasca is a Schedule I substance with no medical or otherwise accepted use".

That opens the door for others, some have tried to invent new religions which I don't think are valid or will fly in court, but where peyote, mushrooms, or whatever else has legitimate use which they do seem to have to some natives then they'd probably be ruled the same way. As far as I know the rest have yet to be ruled on, but the precedent is there and it was a unanimous decision which leaves us with a something quite a bit less than a clear "no" on others in the same context. Looks a lot closer to probably yes, if it's a valid and historical use.

and no corporation can claim to own them. In order to be legal, a drug has to be a dedicated source of profit for the right people. That seems to be the only criteria.

9. They keep a friend of mine from wishing for death.

He gets some sort of rare migraine headache that completely levels him for days at a time. Some people call them "suicide headaches" and my friend is one of them. The pain is so bad he has considered suicide during some of the worst attacks and wished for death during most attacks. A very smart mutual friend had learned mushrooms have been shown to help the condition, sometimes completely curing it with a dose or two. He tried them once and did not have an attack for six months. He used to have them weekly.

Now, five years later, he finds if he eats enough for a mild trip once every three or four months, he can remain headache free.

So I think they are illegal because they expand consciousness, have great potential as medicinals, and aren't produced by a major corporation (pharmaceutical or otherwise).

Anything that makes you feel good other than alcohol is a no no to our dumbass legal system. Shrooms and weed are two of the least harmful most enjoyable naturally occurring plants in the world, yet no we have to drink brewed, manipulated alcohol, or take man made designer drugs. Boo that. Also a big reason, is if shrooms and/or weed were legal less people would drink alcohol and drive drunk therefore less money for alcohol companies and local govts.

I would not be surprised to see the Church at the very foundation of the criminalization of natural drugs like grass and fungi. These substances produce spiritual connections between the universe and individuals that make organized religions fear the "elimination of the middle man". The legal drugs, on the other hand, tend to dull the brain, and thus are assistants to organized religions, which play on peoples' insecurities and encourage dangerous herd mentalities. 2000 years of sustained combat in the name of one holy whatever or another just seems ludicrous, once one's eyes are fully opened.

i think that your theory that orgonized religion is behind the prohibition is correct but not for the resons you specified. religion, in particular christianity, has infused this country with a set of unquestionable morals that frowns on change. mushrooms among other things represent change and threat to these morals and without much thought the people who own this country want to demonize this threat to their consumers narrow view on the shopping mall that is America.
