S.C. House OKs bill to criminalize hallucinogenic herb
COLUMBIA -- An herb known as Magic Mint would be criminalized and put in the same category as marijuana and peyote under a proposal the House has approved.

The plant, Salvia divinorum, can be smoked, chewed or made into tea to produce hallucinogenic affects.

...

The mint herb can be bought on the Internet. It has already been banned or restricted in at least eight states since 2005.

The plant is native to Mexico and has been used for centuries by the Mazatec Indians for ritual healing. The federal Drug Enforcement Agency says its hallucinogenic affects last about 30 minutes.

4. How stupid.
The first reason I think this is asinine is because other Salvia are extremely common ornamental flowers that can be purchased at any garden center or plant nursery.

The second reason, why this plant of all plants? I can think of other hallucinogenic plants that are not regulated by the government. What makes this one so special? Now people are going to want to try it.

5. No publicity is bad publicity. They've made the plant famous now.

6. My curiosity has been piqued. I had to look it up.
http://www.salvia.net/

According to this person, salvia turned him into a loaf of bread:
"...I am not even the least bit sorry that I was merely a loaf of bread and not some vast ocean or animal as other friends have reported to me."

7. Just too much fun
A psychopharmacology text that I have states that Salvinorin-A the psychoactive compound in the plant is a K-opioid receptor agonist and "the most powerful naturally occurring hallucinogen known to science." I'm sure the stuffed shirts are just wetting themselves over that one. "WHAT, SOMETHING MORE FUN THAN ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO AND ITS LEGAL HOW'D WE MISS THAT?

8. I read an article about that a couple of months ago.
The PA legislature said that their reasoning in wanting to ban it was that they feared it would become the "next marijuana." What the fuck does that even mean? And why is that reason to ban it, even if it is similar to marijuana? They article said that it has no ill health affects and has never killed anybody. Hmm, maybe it is the next marijuana.

9. Awesome Salvia Website
hey guys, check out this site I just found about Salvia: www.salviasociety.org  I heard about it on Fox News last night. The guy who owns it was talking how he's trying to stop legislation in different states from banning the herb.  I hope he succeeds, meanwhile they just banned it in my State (Minnesota)
