california tried that and the federal government showed up and shut them down again and again and california's legislature passed it to legalize it for recreational use in 09 and 10 and they got shut down so what can we do if our constitutional rights are not given to us anymore, the same thing that happened last time alot of people see it coming too another revolution is coming and i cant believe its over pot

I am very sure that weed will be legal within the next 10 years....i've smoked almost everyday since the age of 15, but i think that politicians are just starting to see the benifits that it can and will have on our economy, among many other things in society.

I think it might be legalised if they realise how much money is to be made from it. I bet drug dealers fear that one day the government control will replace them. So it's in their best interest to keep marijuana illegal in the United states. I guess it will stay like this though for a while.

17. Big Pharma

Big Pharma is one of the largest reasons it isnt legal yet. They dont want anything legalized and sold to the public without an exclusive patent on it in thier name of course. And Big Pharma has a very big lobbying force in DC.

Another huge reason is the prison and law enforcement industries in america. Too many courts, judges, probation officers, cops, DEA, jails, etc etc ad-nauseam depend on it staying illegal for thier jobs and the propagation of the prison and jail industry (yes, they are lucrative industries). Illegal drugs are a boon to the privatized prison and correctional industries in america.

big tobacco would love to have it legalized, so they can sell it along side of tobacco products. I used to work for a tobacco company, I saw that they have marketing posters, ads ready to go if/when marijuana is legalized.

21. I think the law enforcement racket is a bigger reason...

big pharma makes a lot of drugs that people abuse, but they end up generic with 10-12 years, at which time the cost goes to essentially zero (and profits disappear as well). The prison industry (my step-mother in law is an assistant warden at a for-profit prison) is indeed lucrative and the long term prospects are for continued profitability of companies like Wackenhut.

Look at the Gitmo fiasco ... how did they govt try to sell it to the folks in Illinois? "Think of all the great jobs!" yep, that's pretty much what the criminal justice system has focused on over the past 20-30 years... how can we reconfigure the system so that money, not justice or even rehabilitation, is the primary goal.

And drugs provide the easiest way to snare otherwise innocent/harmless people into the system. So while I'd like to see it legalized and would enjoy sitting on my front porch smoking a big doobie and waving at the cops as they drive by, I'm afraid it'll remain something people will have to do with one eye looking over their shoulder for "the man".

BS, complete and total BS. I'd much rather have everyone get stoned than drunk. We'd certainly have a more peaceful society.

Sadly Iam not as optimistic as others here . Iam also of the belief that our prison system has become big bisness and breaking down the status quo will not take place with one bill in one voting season. I believe its a slow process of education and untill our news media gets onboard with pro legalazation ,they will continue to show negative coverage on this issuse:-(

As much as I think it should be legal I don't see it happening with the current political direction we are going. I think it is more likely that hemp would become legal if it was ever brought up as an option. It isn't a drug, it's just a plant that has so many uses and can have a massive profit possibility.
