SDNNShould Californians continue their inexplicable march toward sanity and vote in favor of the initiative to legalize marijuana for personal use, many Golden State parents will have to reconsider, readjust, rejigger … recalibrate one of the most important of all parenting skills:
Lying...
The subject of drugs has long presented a lot of us parents with tough choices. Should we be truthful with our increasingly savvy and soon-to-be-of-age children, and own up to indiscretions of our youth, and maybe even to indiscretions of our adulthood? Offer watered-down indiscretions? (see “Inhale, Didn’t” under Clinton, Bill.) Flat-out lie? (“No.”) Try to distract them with “Got your nose!”? (Though not particularly effective on a 14-year-old.)
So far, so whatever. This has been going on for a long time, and to whatever degree every family has worked it out, well, we’ve worked out. But the marijuana initiative will, for some of us, change everything...
