Arizona Cardinals Donate $10,000 to Fight Cancer Patients and Medical Marijuana
By: Michael Whitney Tuesday September 21, 2010 12:44 pm

~snip~

With this contribution, the Arizona Cardinals and team President Michael Bidwill have sided against Arizona’s seriously ill, using money from loyal fans to get between patients like Heather and their doctors.

It’s especially ironic considering the team has no problem serving alcohol by the barrel to fans at each home game. Yet team president Michael Bidwell decided to use the Cardinals’ money from fans – not his own – to oppose medical marijuana. It’s unfair to Cardinals fans and, most importantly, it’s unfair to Arizona patients.

Prop 203 is up in the polls, and Arizonans have already passed medical marijuana in the state twice. Voters approved medical marijuana ballot initiatives in 1996 and in 1998, but both times the state legislature blocked the will of the people. There is no sign that the state legislature would again block medical marijuana if Prop 203 passes in November, but we can’t let our guard down.

1. It's just business.
Logically, if the fans come to the games stoned, they won't drink as much.

Then again, with cotton-mouth, they might drink more.... Somebody should approach him with that prospect. I expect they make as much from beer sales as they do at the gate.

6. Alcohol sales might be hurt a bit, but snack sales would go through the roof.
Imagine vendors selling "special" brownies... "I'll take a couple of those brownies, 2 bags of Doritoes, 3 hot dogs and better throw in a pretzel just in case!"

7. Here's hoping the franchise loses 14 more games this season and at least 16 next
season. ;)

4. I don't get why Michael Bidwell did this.
Here's a free clue for him: If you're afraid of your booze sales decreasing if people can smoke pot, then stop. If pot were legal, then what would stop you from selling it at your stadium? And what rule says that pot users never want a beer?

I don't follow sports franchises, so maybe someone can help me with this. Is Bidwell just a conservative looney? That's the only reason I can see to blow money on a bid to halt pot sales. A lot of old school conservatives see pot as a symbol of the left (which is funny, I've never used it myself), and they have this pavlovian hate response to legalization.

9. His family are conservatives
I think Michael donated to Harry Mitchell but he is a moderate Dem.

5. Arizona. Bidwell.
Has nothing to do with money, this family is and has always been complete scum.

It is true that Michael is a much better team owner than his dad was, but that doesn't make him any less an over-privileged parasite.

8. The real irony then is that alcohol supposedly causes cancer!
Someone was just telling me the other day that recent science work suggests that alcohol abuse causes cancer. So like are these guys in favor of cancer? But full of hate for the poor suffering cancer patients? What kind of nutbar insanity is that?
