1. What are they telling us?

Well, gardening can be a hobby for enjoyment, or it can be an essential means of survival.

Now, we know that those in the White House have no need to offset the cost of produce in relation to their income.

The cost of food, especially produce, will be skyrocketing all year long. We are going into a phase of food inflation that will make those who can't farm their own feel dejected. Here, in the US it may not be about total starvation, but for many parts of the world, it will. I take that back. For our growing Underclass, if they have the space and means, growing your on food is going to become more essential and important than cable TV or a cellphone, for sure.

I advocate home gardening and have helped several people start their own garden plots. The problem now is that zoning often stands in the way of small livestock that helps to fill-out the nutrition requirements. You do need protein and chickens, rabbits, goats, or what have you, are a part of that equation. We are up against some soon to be obsolete restrictions that will stand, glaringly, in the way of our need to re-localize our economy and food production because there will be no other affordable or viable alternative to stave off our own starvation.

2. I love my herb garden on my roof

That's the only space I have to plant, and everything's in pots or planters ... but it's more than most people in the middle of a big city have. I grow sage, thyme, parsley, rosemary, chives, and several others. I've also grown tomatoes, spinach, sorrel (I adore sorrel). It's so nice to go up and snip or pick things at dinner time.

But it's too early to plant here yet. Three weeks maybe.
