Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow Joke About Frank/Paul Marijuana Bill

On their respective programs both Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow took a light hearted look at the Barney Frank and Ron Paul proposed legislation to federally decriminalize marijuana.

Olbermann went more for jokes of the Reefer Madness, Easy Rider, and Cheech and Chong variety: (video)

Olbermann devoted more time to the bill than Maddow did, but they really didn’t discuss the issue behind the easy jokes. According to drugwarfacts.org, “Although the intent of a ‘War on Drugs’ may have been to target drug smugglers and ‘King Pins,’ over half (51.6%) of the 1,663,582 total 2009 arrests for drug abuse violations were for marijuana — a calculated total of 858,408. Of those, an estimated 758,593 people (45.6%) were arrested for marijuana possession alone. By contrast in 2000, a total of 734,497 Americans were arrested for marijuana offenses, of which 646,042 were for possession alone.”

Think about that. More people were arrested for marijuana possession in 2009 than were arrested for all types of marijuana offenses in 2000. According to the Drug Policy Alliance, New York City leads the nation in marijuana possession arrests. Fifteen percent of all arrests in the city are for marijuana possession. A majority of the 140 people arrested a day are Black and Latino.

The only joke about the absurd prohibition of pot IS the absurd prohibition of pot.

I did not appreciate the attempt at humor on such an important, and ridiculously overdue, measure to decriminalize pot. Decriminalize!!! I can't believe, in 2011, we're even still talking about this!

Whether it be text or video, no one seems to be able to deliver news concerning news about marijuana without making a joke about it (especially the puns, which are beyond banal at this point). Seeing "Ron/Frank: Joint Effort" or "Has the Country Gone to Pot?" makes me cringe.

Lamar Smith, chairman of Committee on the Judiciary said he would turn HR 2306 down, citing the usual nonsense:

Smith said that marijuana leads to other drugs, and that legalization would lead to stronger drug cartels — an argument that legalization advocates absolutely disagree with.

"Decriminalizing marijuana will only lead to millions more Americans becoming addicted to drugs and greater profits for drug cartels who fund violence along the U.S.-Mexico border," he said. "Allowing states to determine their own marijuana policy flies in the face of Supreme Court precedent."

... and if he can't figure out that 60-80% of Americans "get it" re: medical cannabis and a majority (or almost) "get it" re: recreational cannabis, he might try buying a clue and then try speaking seriously with us about a pretty damned important topic re: science, common sense and compassion,not to mention senseless social control.
