1. Cy Ryan of the Las Vegas Sun
has a few more words

This must be why paying taxes isn’t voluntary.

Nevada teachers — some of whom might soon be forced to take pay cuts or furloughs — should not count on a timely bonus from the fund created by Gov. Jim Gibbons to supplement their pay with voluntary donations.

As of Friday, the Education Gift Certificate program, unveiled during Gibbons’ Feb. 8 State of the State address, had received four contributions for a not-so-grand total of $261.

“It hasn’t been a big seller so far,” state Superintendent Keith Rheault said.

State officials’ plan was to distribute the donated money to teachers by the end of the year. It is being held in a trust fund and will remain there “until we get enough to do something,” Rheault said.

2. I'd gladly pay more in taxes
If teachers were well compensated.

Gift certificates are somewhat a slap in the face.
I realize MANY, if not ALL, teachers dip into their own funds to pay for classroom supplies but gift certificates?
Hmmm....

3. I easily spent over a thousand a year in supplies and books
for my classes.

Note Gibbons didn't give a nickel to this program; apparently taking Kathy Karrasch to D.C. was more important than the state's teachers.

4. Did they pull this article?
All I'm getting is the RJ page - all the page particulars, but no article and no reader comments. Even tried backing up to the main webpage and going in new (even cleared my cache) and nada.

5. That's the point. The RGJ NEVER posted the article.
The paper is INFAMOUS for screw-ups.

That was the punch line of the OP.

6. Cr*p. Sorry.
That's me - trying to comprehend before coffee and with a completely stuffed-up, allergy-afflicted head.

I'm really not an idiot, I just play one on DU . . .

7. LOL!!!!!
Gibbons couldn't afford to pay into this gift certificate fund--he had to pay for his mistress to go to D.C. with him.
