They came, and then they came back.

On edit: local TV coverage http://www.kctv5.com/video/23598390/index.html

My school is closing on June 4th. It first opened in 1914. Today we had a celebration and reunion. People who attended our school in the 1940s were there to say goodbye.

There was a lot of history to think about as I walked down the hall greeting old friends and former students and meeting students who were there long before me.

It was wonderful to reunite with so many. But it was also a very sad day.

I almost titled this The Death of a School. But I'm trying to be positive behind the tears.

At one time we were the only elementary school in the country with a dental clinic.

Some of the neighbors fear that within a week of the last day of school the building will be covered with graffiti. It has been an exhausting battle.

This is the best custodian on the planet.

They moved our cafeteria cashier a couple months ago. She cried as soon as she walked in and saw us today. Then she told us that at her new school they don't make the kids learn their lunch number. She was appalled.

You wouldn't believe what the principal did to the building after 9/11. We still have the flags and bring them out for special occasions.

Just a sad day. Not really sure how to end this post except to wish you will never have to understand how hard this is. I keep telling myself it's just a building . . . . .

6. Nice article and picture:

KANSAS CITY, Missouri--McCoy Elementary will host a farewell open house celebration on Tuesday, May, 18.

Current and past students, family, neighborhood community members, and business partners are invited to tour the school.

McCoy is located at 1524 White Ave. in northeast Kansas City. It's one of 26 schools the Kansas City, Missouri School Board voted to close this spring as part of cost-cutting measures.

In recent years, parents and teachers at McCoy Elementary school had successfully fought off efforts to close the school, citing its strong test scores. But the budget woes and the building's lack of air conditioning helped lead to the decision to close the 94-year-old school.

The school was named after John Calvin McCoy and opened in 1914.

8. Yet another example of academic incompetence in the media
If the school opened in 1914, that would make it 96 years old. Not 94.

10. Thank you for sharing your school.
Schools are really repositories of so much history. I hate to see them shut. :(

13. Talk about history!
Folks brought pictures and old report cards. And someone found a bunch of pictures at school that went back 40 or 50 years.

Now what do you do with all of that? We need a museum.

11. Hugs from me in...
...California. I tried to imagine how this would feel if it happened to my school. It must be awful for you and your colleagues and students. My school was like a family. To see it end that way would be heartbreaking.

12. In the end we are just tired
We fought this closing for 4 years in a row.

One of the neighbors told me today "A least we didn't go down without a fight". He was proud. That was good to know.
