I have a dilemma. Anyone willing to help?

I'm a 20 year old college student.
I'm going for a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work.

I am considering a Master's Degree in Social Work and a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration.

I would be happy in either field. The problem is figuring out which one offers more job security.

If you had to choose between Social Work and Higher Education Administration, which one would you pick and why?

2. I'd get the MSW

It's an extremely flexible degree and if you are interested in Management is a good stepping stone. The opportunities for work place choice are enormous and you would have the ability to work varied hours which later in life might give you all kinds of different options for schooling.

3. You need to get on the phone w/

people in both fields and tell them exactly that. Ask a few for "informational interviews".

They're both fields where folks will be eager and helpful (people LOVE to rattle on and be listened to!), and they'll also possibly be great advisors/contacts going forward.

6. Considering what's happening to so many children of the poor

in Iraq and Afghanistan, I would bet on a future in social work.

8. Do be aware of the truly terrible

pay in social work. Higher Education Administration undoubtedly pays better.

But the turnover of social workers is so constant, there's sure to be job security there.

Do keep in mind, that no matter what degree or career you are considering, the odds are very high that you will have several very different careers in your life.

The pay is terrible given the requirements of most of the jobs, but there are many intangible rewards. A MSW will permit a great deal of flexibility and there are many specific areas of practice depending on your interests and skills. There are opportunities in both public and private sectors. so I'd say social work gives you more job security because it will offer you more choices.

11. Reminds me of the story about

the new therapist coming out of work the first day. She was a reck from hearing all the drama and woe from the clients and felt really spent. She looked over at the older therapist and he looked fine. So, she asked him how he does it. After listening to all of those sad stories all day how do you look so fresh, she asked him. He said, "you listen?"

12. I would want teaching experience before I became an administrator

I believe you need to start in a classroom and then rise to the administrative level.

Being an advisor, being over student housing, student events, etc.
