(Excepts from a letter from an experienced teacher in Riverview Gardens, Missouri. It is a mostly poor African-American inner suburb just to the North of St. Louis. The School District was recently taken over by Missouri state education officials after they declared the district "unaccredited")
"what's going on with Riverview Gardens. I'm now unemployed due to the state takeover and all teachers have had their tenure taken away. Most of us don't know what's going to happen-we're all confused, frustrated and deeply hurt about all of this....staff has not been interviewed, principals have been either fired, transferred and/or retired, etc...We have little or no union strength and the list goes on...As a professional, could you tell me how this happens to good teachers who have worked very hard, not missed work, (sick days may be taken away, etc..we really don't know...)and performed above and beyond expectations? Our nurses have been fired, only to be replaced with nurses aids....
There are so many people who are afraid to go to the media about this because they don't want their careers placed in jeopardy"
The superintendent in this district was recently convicted of fraud and embezzlement.
