Finalist states announced in "Race to the top"

U.S. Education Secretary announced the finalists Tuesday morning. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have a chance to win a share of $3.4 billion.

The states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

Apparently Washington state lost out because they refused to allow charter schools. Good for them.

Dammit--- we are a strong union state. In the first round, several local districts were unable to apply because their locals found a conflict with the evaluation process. If we "win", I wonder what effect this will have on us? Will the districts, who will salivate over all that cash, disregard our contracts or ask them to open them?

I want to move to Washington!

Mary Bell, president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council, said the state may have been hurt because it doesn't force student test scores to be tied to teacher evaluations. WEAC, the state's largest teachers union, supported a state law passed last year that left it up to local collective bargaining negotiations to determine whether test scores would be a part of the teacher evaluation process and even then the results couldn't be used to fire or discipline a teacher.
