An accurate description, and this has been going on longer than just a few years.

4. Only if it's the profiteers. I teach in a good charter.
We're managed by the local school district, and our teachers are unionized. That's the way charters should be run.

5. that's what i was getting at
i understand there's a good way to do these things.

charter schools weren't developed originally as a simply another way to callously extract profit.

7. Thank you for this.
I see a lot of charter school hating on this site, and the reality is, not all of us are run by private corporations or idiots.

8. similarly, i see a lot of wall street hating, and we're not all like blankfein
in fact, most of us are democrats, and rather liberal at that. this is manhattan-based industry, after all!

not to mention that some of us are in the business of helping worthwhile companies effectively borrow money so they can hire or at least don't have to lay people off. it's not all "casino" stuff, in fact most of it isn't, despite the way the media portrays it.

13. only10% are managed by for-profits
TEN PERCENT - that's around 500 schools nationwide - and that percentage is SHRINKING.

You'd think - to hear people talk - that all charters are just money-making operations. The truth is that charter schools are getting more done with less money because there is less waste, fewer bureaucrats, and a whole damn lot less red tape.

15. We definitely have less red tape.
We have one front office clerk (aka goddess) who handles almost everything from budget issues to attendance to the phones. She's amazing. Then we have one principal and one counselor (supposed to get one more of each this year, though the new asst. principal is there to ease in as the new principal next year). That's it. Our principal handles almost everything and is wonderful. I'm going to miss him.

If we need to order something, we do. If we want to apply for a grant, we do. If we have a question, at most we have three people to ask. It's a lot nicer than some bigger public high schools I've been in that way.

12. I wish there were a separate term for the private charters
It's too bad that the good charter that you teach in isn't called something else (magnet, focused ed, gateway, something?), just something so that we could hold up a protest sign to let the public and politicians know that we do not want privatized schools. Then we would be able to force our single-digit IQ politicians to vote them down and close them down when they fail our kids. Notice I didn't say "if" they fail our kids.

14. There are no "private charters" - all charters are PUBLIC.
Or do you mean those ten percent that are managed by for-profit organizations (who also manage traditional public schools).

9. Meh. Really effective satire requires an element of exaggeration.
And...Oh... they left out "utterly clueless politicians".

...teacher's feet: the politicians could be pulling it out from under her. :7
