Hey TEACHERS ( and others): wear PURPLE on OCTOBER 20th...
... (or I'll hunt you down and have you whacked).

Seriously.... it memorializes the six ( there were more, actually) recent PS homo-cide ( i.e. gay kids who killed themselves after being the victims of ongoing, systematized UNCHECKED aggravated harassment in and around pubic schools) victims.

Also.... October is GLBT History month.... which I'm *sure* we all already know about thru school-sanctioned activities in schools across the country.

Thanks ! October 20 is this WEDNESDAY. These KIDS NEED OUR SUPPORT. Pass it on.

3. I will wear purple.
And no, I didn't know that October is GLBT History month. Not that we do much for ANY months, being busy trying to prepare kids to pass tests so our schools won't be "turned around."

5. I'm not sure I own anything purple.
Will lilac or lavender be okay?

7. Close enough, RR.

Not sure why "purple" exactly but it's evolved some symbolic significance related to GLBTs.

From wiki:

>>>>>>>Today the color purple is also known as a "pride" color among the gay and LGBT community.
At the 24 June 2007 San Francisco Gay Pride Parade, Yahoo passed out 3 7/16" in diameter round plastic stickers with a picture of a gay man or woman imaged as one of the Yahoo Gay Pride avatars against an HTML/CSS Purple background that said Out, Proud, and Purple.<30>
In the mid 1970s, there was a gay piano bar at 2223 Market St. between Noe and Castro in San Francisco called the Purple Pickle.<31>
The purple hand is an LGBT symbol that derives from an incident which occurred on Halloween night (31 October), 1969, when sixty members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) staged a protest at the San Francisco Examiner in response to a series of news articles disparaging LGBT people in San Francisco's gay bars and clubs.>>>>>

10. I agree. Frankly it would have been better to do this in NOV.
... to allow time to publicize the event.

But I'm thinking the organizers wanted to address the seriousness of the issue.. ASAP. One account had 9 kids killing themselves the first two weeks of Sept. ( back to school weeks) with glbt issues involved.

Kids needed support pronto. Hence the hurry.

11. I love Madison too. Historically WAY out in front on these issues.
First PS curricula ( that was actually implemented) that dealt with GLBTs and GLBT families came from Madison PSs.

If it wasn't so friggin' cold there I'd move it up on my "places I might retire to" list.

12. you get used to the cold -
There is so much going for this place, a little nippiness is worth it. (And I'm a "southern girl" . . . )

I absolutely LOVE how liberal it is!

13. I'm wearing purple today.
I told my 16 year old son about it last night. He wanted to participate, but he doesn't have any purple clothes. He got all mad and said, " why don't i have a purple shirt?"

14. I'm wearing purple, too.
I spilled yogurt on my favorite purple shirt first thing this morning but luckily, I have two purple shirts. I'm working on that "When I'm an old lady I shall wear purple" thing so I actually have lots of purple stuff - purple sneakers, purple jeans, purple underwear, even purple towels. I know, TMI.
