Class Sizes of 62--Detroit to Close 70 More Schools

Detroit’s financial manager, Robert Bobb, wants to close 70 more schools to help close the city’s $327 million budget deficit. Bobb said that the school closings will increase high school class sizes to an appalling 62 students per class. 60 schools have already been shut down over the past two years. The plan also calls for laying off 249 teachers and extends a plan that deducts $250 per period from teachers’ paychecks.

2. Where do they teach a class of 62? the gymnasium?

I have never seen a high school classroom large enough to safely hold that many students.

4. I just read an article in the NYT about a charter school

that does that-- 60 kids and 4 teachers (one seasoned teacher and 3 newbies). I don't know why every stupid idea has to be tried out. I read the article and the place sounds like it's barely controlled chaos with a free for all happening about every 30 minutes.

5. Sadly, it forebodes the fast food version education...

...just enough teaching delivered for the students to perform on standardized tests, and then also provide high-turnover student teacher jobs with little room for career advancement. It's not unlike some graduate school programs in the US.
