8. I saw one here before where the student was asked to pretend they were
a Chinese immigrant building the railroads and to write a letter home about their experiences. The student then filled the page with Chinese letters. It was the best.

The teachers just can't see the creativity in these answers.

9. If you have never read
Fractured English and More Fractured English, you should. Those books are compilations of this sort of stuff, not just from students (though that is the main focus), but also from signs, newspaper ads and articles, and court proceedings and other official documents.

10. My favorite is from an essay a student of mine wrote for an English 101
(College Composition) course back in the 1970s:

"The English language was invented in the 17th century by the kings and queens of England so that they could keep in touch with the captains of their ships when they were away on long ocean voyages."
