LAUSD set to lay off up to 5000 teachers
It's hard to tell at this point the extent to which this will impact class sizes, but clearly it will. (approx 15% RIF).I wonder how much longer teachers will be willing to accept responsibility for outcomes in the face of this third-worldification of our education system.

4. improved performance on standardized tests.
We have heard that no child is to be left behind, and that every child is to make it to the top. At the end of the school year student's performance on standards tests is linked up with the teacher responsible. As class sizes increase and facilities shrink (next year the school library will be closed altogether. This year the textbook room is open only by appointment. We fired most of the custodians; We can't afford to maintain our copy machines, etc.) we can't expect to meet our progress goals for the year, but the expectations are not changing--everyone makes it to the top; no one is left behind.

3. Exactly - especially considering the young ones are the first to go.

"...As a general rule, layoffs must be in reverse order of seniority – “last hired, first fired.” One of the key issues that must be resolved in the March 15th RIF process is whether or not the district layoff list is in the correct order. That is why it is so important for you to figure out your seniority date so you can make sure that the district has the correct date."

6. That is my complaint.
A friend was teaching for a district for 4 years. He got "Teacher of the Year" for the entire district last year and was then let go this year under their "last hired, first fired" policy.

7. Seems like they're "accepting responsibility" whether they like it or not.
More importantly... whether they're actually responsible for any problems or not.
