Speaking of teachers voting republican

How interesting that just this evening I learned that one of our new state reps here in red state tea party hell Kansas is a first year teacher on leave this semester to serve in the legislature. He's a tea party republican. And just last week, when the state legislature voted to fund schools, this tea party teacher voted NO.

Now this vote was cast AFTER our local media had made everyone within 100 miles very well aware of the fact that without the state funding, the district where this tea party brainiac teaches (and several other districts as well) will be forced to lay off teachers.

So let's do the math here. He's a first year teacher. He teaches a nontested subject. And his district has to lay off several hundred teachers. So I figure that this numbskull will be MINUS a job in a few months.

I can't wrap my brain around voting to lose my own job. That's just beyond stupid.

if it was done for the right reasons, it would be very noble. When it results in hurting public education - and therefore children, and well all of society frankly - then yeah, it is beyond stupid. Education needs advocates, not bulldozers.

The vote was pretty much along party lines. I think only 3 republicans voted for the funding bill. All of the Democrats voted yes.

No... before anyone else posts... I'm not saying it was the right vote... but it takes integrity to vote in a way that you believe to be right even though it will cost you personally.

IIRC, Kansas has a part-time legislature without significant salary, right?

The state reps make around $17K a year. Less than half what a first year teacher in his district makes.

24. I know the following about this brainiac:

He's retired military. His daughter was murdered in 07 and he was on the front page demanding justice within a few hours. Very high profile murder. Following year, the state passed a law giving cops the right to access cell phone records. This guy claimed they had to wait to find his daughter's body because Sprint wouldn't turn over phone records without a warrant. She was abducted and killed pretty quickly, so getting her phone records wouldn't have saved her life. Dad was all over the news again when this legislation was passed.

He ran and was elected for the first time in November. He beat a wonderful experienced Democrat.

I have no idea what his future plans are. But I think if he runs for re-election in '12, we can expect our county Democratic party to remind the voters that he voted to lay himself off. :)

The OP questions why one would cast a vote that would result in the loss of his job. Agree or disagree with his reason, I admire the action. It seems that policy made by the OP would be determined monetarily, and for personal benefit. DID YOU READ THE ENTIRE THREAD?

It isn't that he isn't voting his beliefs, it's that she disagrees with the beliefs and finds it interesting/entertaining that he not only makes the wrong decision, but does so to his own detriment.

She doesn't appear to have gotten to the point of believing that the vote was made on principle... but that's really a different point.

No I wouldn't vote to lose my income that sustains my family.

I also can't comprehend how a teacher wouldn't understand that state funding is what keeps schools operating. Taking it away is destructive.
